Sidebar: ENF Partners with Elks DA Program The Elks Drug Awareness program has been in the business of educating children, parents and their communities about the dangers of drug abuse since 1983. Over the years, the Elks National Foundation has provided the program with nearly $9 million to help fuel its efforts. In addition, many states use part of their ENF grants to fund drug awareness efforts in their states.

The Drug Awareness program is best known for its educational literature that is distributed free to Lodge communities. But the program has also been hard at work developing Public Service Announcements, training their volunteers, exhibiting at community events, and participating in Red Ribbon Week events nationwide.

In 1999, the Drug Awareness program partnered with the ENF to award Promise Grants to Lodges that pledged to hold drug- and alcohol-free events for community youths. Each year, up to 250 Lodges are eligible to receive $200 in reimbursement for event expenses. (More information about the Promise Grants program, and the 2004 grant offer, will appear in the November Joy of Giving column.)
