Featured Director - Steve Edgerley, Vermont

Steve Edgerley found a permanent home for his Hoop Shoot contest—literally! Steve, a member of Newport, Vt., Lodge No. 2155, partners with North Country Union High School each year to host his community’s local and district contests. In recent years, North Country remodeled the gym floor to include a permanent short foul line—specifically for the Hoop Shoot!

“We no longer have to tape down an extra foul line for the 8- and 9-year-olds,” explains Steve. “The school built in an extra foul line just for us.”

Steve has dedicated himself to the Hoop Shoot program for more than 20 years. He serves as both a Lodge and State Hoop Shoot Director.

Life in the Off-Season

When not donating his time to the Hoop Shoot, Steve volunteers on Vermont’s Polar Plunge Committee. The committee plans an annual event at Lake Champlain, where brave fundraisers swim the lake’s icy waters to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Steve also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his Golden Retriever, Little Buddy.

For now though, Polar Plungers and Little Buddy will have to wait. Steve remains busy planning his local Hoop Shoot contest, scheduled for Saturday, December 1.

Through the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program, the Elks National Foundation teaches kids the values of hard work and good sportsmanship. In 2012-13, the ENF allocated $748,055 to fund this program. For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit www.elks.org/hoopshoot.
