Featured Director - LeRoy Belanger, Minnesota

This week's Featured Director is in memory of LeRoy Belanger. We thank him for his seven years of service with the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest.

LeRoy Belanger’s greatest achievements stemmed from his involvement in the Hoop Shoot. During Belanger’s seven years as State Hoop Shoot Director, Minnesota earned six 100 percent Lodge participation awards, which hung proudly in his office.

Last year, Belanger had the opportunity to carry a flag at the Hoop Shoot National Finals.

“It was very much of an honor for me,” he said.

A Loyal Elk

When it came to the Elks, Belanger hit the ground running.

“I got involved in the Hoop Shoot shortly after my initiation and never looked back,” he said.

As a 40-year member of International Falls, Minn., Lodge No. 1599, Belanger was actively involved in his Lodge. He served as Lodge Chaplain, Youth Activities Chair, and Flag Day Chair.

Always On the Go

When not busy with the Hoop Shoot or other Lodge activities, Belanger enjoyed bowling, hunting and announcing softball tournaments. Hopefully, he also took time to relax and admire his Minnesota State Hoop Shoot awards. They were his greatest achievements, after all.

Through the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program, the Elks National Foundation teaches kids the values of hard work and good sportsmanship. In 2012-13, the ENF allocated $748,055 to fund this program. For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit http://www.elks.org/hoopshoot/.
