Boosting Voluntary Service Programs with Grants

In Denver, Colorado, there’s a place called The Fourth Quarter with designated apartments for veterans to live and receive supportive services. A couple of years ago, the Voluntary Service program added this residence as one of the locations where Elks serve veterans on a regular basis. Last year, Voluntary Service Representative Randy Taylor applied for a Boost Grant to support his service there.

The aim of this Boost Grant project was to provide access to therapeutic services and address food insecurity. The grant funded a licensed therapist to hold parenting and music therapy sessions and allowed Randy to purchase nonperishable food to supplement the veteran families’ nutritional needs.

Randy explained that he wanted to help veteran families who are facing difficulties in parenting and communication due to the stresses of military service and reintegration into civilian life. He felt that access to music therapy would offer them tools to navigate these challenges. The music therapy was well received as an enjoyable way to learn the skills needed to face their challenges. Veterans at The Fourth Quarter also appreciated the chance to restock their on-site food pantry.

Elks involved in Voluntary Service have used Boost Grants for all kinds of programs to support veterans this year. Here’s what some of the other volunteers have done recently.

  • In St. Cloud, Minnesota, Thomas Kramin hosted a trip to a Minnesota Twins baseball game, including hot dogs, souvenirs, and treats from Dairy Queen.
  • In Pell City, Alabama, Representative Don Richey and veterans celebrated the 4th of July with a Boost Grant sponsored barbecue.
  • Patrisia Miller commemorated D-Day with a picnic for veterans at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Augusta.
  • Several Reps supported VA baby showers with their Boost Grants, including Montrose, New York and Bedford, Massachusetts.

Boost Grants are a great way for Elks to strengthen their Voluntary Service programs and provide even more for the veterans they are serving regularly. If you or someone in your Lodge is interested in participating with Voluntary Service, visit our website to learn more.
