2006 MVS Top Winner: Tracy Meng
Q: How did you choose to attend Harvard and how did you pick your major?
A: I was choosing between Duke and Harvard and getting the Elks scholarship was a huge reason why I felt comfortable choosing Harvard. I wanted to go to Harvard and experience what it’s like to be in a city. Also, I was impressed by all the people I’ve talked to who graduated from Harvard. I was shocked that I got in, and humbled by the opportunity to go there.

While at Harvard, I concentrated on economics and psychology. I knew I wanted to do something with business and nonprofits, so economics was a great study for me to learn how to think like an economist. Then, I took a psychology class and it was really interesting. Overall, I went with the classes I really liked.

Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: During my junior year at Harvard, I was very fortunate to secure an internship helping companies learn how to strategize at Bain & Company. I took a job with them after graduation. I like doing pro bono cases. Recently, we were working with a nonprofit about how best to expand. I really enjoy it.

Q: What did your ENF scholarship mean to you?
A: It meant the world to me. When I did receive the scholarship, I was not only welcomed to Orlando, but I was also welcomed by the local community. It was nice to meet everyone and to see what a great community of philanthropists the Elks is. I felt like my dreams were very supported by the Elks. I am so grateful to the organization. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Elks.

Q: What was your favorite memory from attending the Elks Convention?
A: My favorite memory was that my grandparents got to come. I hadn’t seen them in years, so for them to fly to the U.S. was really special. So, my favorite memory was spending time with them in Orlando. It really brings back great memories, and the Elks made that happen.

Q: What does being an Elks scholar mean to you?
A: Being an Elks scholar means that I am someone who has been very blessed to have received such an honor. It also means that I have an obligation to give back to my community.

Q: What advice do you have for other Elks scholars?
A: I would say to follow your heart. If you go along that path and you really do what you love and are passionate about, all the minor things will work out in the end.

Q: What is an interesting fact about you that most people would find surprising or unexpected?
A: I am a diehard hip hop fan. I find it so fascinating. I love watching YouTube videos of people doing really fun choreography.
