Bridgeport Elks Dictionary Project

The Dictionary Project

The Dictionary Project was founded in 1995 by Mary French of Charleston, SC. It's primary focus is to promote literacy to children in third-grade as they transition from learning how to read to identify and use information. Over the course of the program nearly 15 million third-grade students have received dictionaries including about 2.5 million dictionaries donated in 2009.

Elks joined this movement in 2004. Nationwide they have donated more than 1.2 million dictionaries to third-grade students and their teachers as sponsors of The Dictionary Project over the last 6 years. There are 600 lodges that actively participate in the program. To see if your nearest lodge participates in this program, find a lodge near you.

Bridgeport Elks Lodge #714 delivered dictionaries, backpacks, pencil cases and other goodies to Bridgeport Elementary 3rd Graders. Our special Covid dictionaries contain a wealth of information in addition to the usual spelling and definitions. There are fun facts of the 50 States, The Constitution, facts on every Country on every Continent, braille, sign language, as well as many others. We also included drug awareness bookmarks and plenty of pencils. The kids will like the longest word in the English Language by asking their favorite teachers in Bridgeport to pronounce it! These dictionaries are a valuable resource tool for the students in our community during this time.

Bevin Sager, a Trustee of the Bridgeport Elks and Youth Activity Chair, spearheaded the Elks Dictionary Project. She went the extra mile to make it special for the 3rd Graders at Bridgeport Elementary. Thank you to all Elks that showed up to help make this a special day for the kids. Showing that Elks care, Elks Share!
Included in the back packs were information for our Drug Awareness, Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot Programs.
