Last year, Woonsocket Lodge No. 850 combined their Gratitude and Promise Grants to make sure these children would have a warm and happy Christmas. They worked with the local school to identify children from low-income families that needed warm coats for the winter. After the 86 children were determined, the Woonsocket Elks hit the stores to shop. They came back with coats, hats, scarves, gloves, toys and Burger King gift cards for each of the children. Volunteers wrapped all of the gifts at the Lodge, so each child would have a personalized present. The Gratitude and Promise Grants went far, and the Lodge was grateful to receive them.
“These Grants helped us reach out to a greater number of families within our communities,” says Project Manager Jeanne Fagnant.
After the shopping and gift wrapping was complete, all of the children and their families were invited to the Lodge for a Christmas party. Santa was on hand to pass out presents and also listen to the children’s Christmas wishes. The Shriner clowns were in attendance to provide face-painting, balloon animals and more. The Elks also provided an enjoyable lunch for the children and their families after the day of activities. The Elks good deeds did not go unrecognized, and succeeded in sharing the Christmas cheer!
“On behalf of all the students who are dressed a little warmer and who enjoyed such a wonderful day,” says School Principal Donna Coderre. “I thank you for once again making the holiday season a bit brighter for so many kids.”
Although all 300 Promise Grants have been claimed this year, your Lodge can still receive a Gratitude Grant worth $1,000. Once your Lodge reaches the GER’s $4.50 per-capita goal, an application is mailed to your Lodge. Don’t leave money on the table. Make sure your Lodge reaches per capita, and applies for a Gratitude Grant.
The ENF awards Gratitude Grants to Lodges to directly address local needs. Lodges are eligible to apply for Gratitude Grants after meeting the GER’s per-capita goal. To find out more about Gratitude Grants, visit www.elks.org/enf/community.
