Position Purpose

We are seeking a general maintenance mechanic to assist with the operation and maintenance of our two historically significant buildings and the associated campus. This role will include performing routine maintenance and emergency repairs on building systems and machinery, such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.

Our general maintenance mechanic responsibilities also involve diagnosing mechanical issues, replacing parts, and conducting preventative maintenance to ensure equipment and facilities operate efficiently and safely. The qualified applicant will need strong troubleshooting skills, the ability to work with various tools, and experience with electrical components and other facilities-related machinery and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Repairs: Conduct routine maintenance, perform timely repairs on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, and replace or install parts.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical and system problems using observation, testing, and diagnostic tools.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Implement preventative maintenance programs to ensure machinery and systems are in optimal working condition and to prevent breakdowns.
  • Equipment Upkeep: Inspect machinery, lubricate equipment, adjust components, and perform minor fabrication or modifications as needed.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of all maintenance, repairs, and parts used for tracking and reporting.
  • Inventory Management: Order, manage, and maintain inventories of necessary tools, materials, and replacement parts.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills: Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, specialized equipment, and the ability to read technical information.

Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving: Strong ability to quickly diagnose and resolve complex issues in mechanical and electrical systems.

Knowledge Base: Understanding of basic engineering principles, plumbing, electrical systems, and heating/air- conditioning systems.

Soft Skills: Excellent communication, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and a strong commitment to safety protocols.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent, or at least 1,800 hours of trade school in a related area/field.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including climbing, lifting, and working in various indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office work and hands-on work in and around the buildings and grounds.
  • Occasional evenings, weekends, or holiday work may be required for emergencies, events, and site coverage.
  • Exposure to seasonal weather changes and outdoor elements.

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Fulltime, Non-Exempt
  • Compensation: $24 per hour
  • Work Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (M–F); some flexibility available
  • Location: Easily accessible via CTA (Brown/Purple Line, bus lines)
