We are seeking a talented Staff Accountant to join our team. This role will play a crucial role in the financial operations of our 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and supporting the overall financial health of the organization. The Staff Accountant will assist in day-to-day accounting tasks, prepare financial reports, and support the Assistant Controller in various accounting functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain the general ledger by posting and reviewing journal entries, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Reconcile credit card accounts and other financial accounts.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely and accurate payments and collections.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of the annual audit.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including nonprofit tax reporting requirements.
  • Assist in grant accounting, tracking, and reporting.
  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation.
  • Provide support for special projects and initiatives as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience; 501©(3) nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and systems; experience with Sage Intacct is a plus.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and other financial analysis tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the nonprofit sector.

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience - $55K-$70K
  • Work Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (M–F); some flexibility available; hybrid work environment
  • Location: Easily accessible via CTA (Brown/Purple Line, bus lines)
