AMERICANISM ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

The local Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is proud to announce the three winners of their annual Americanism Essay Contest. Developed to encourage writing skills and capture the thoughts of students on patriotic subjects, this year’s theme was “Why I’m Proud to Say the Pledge of Allegiance.” This subject could not be more appropriate than right now.

Winners were all from Mrs. Lucas’ Fifth Grade Class at George Washington Elementary School. First Place winner is Brittany Morgan. Second Place went to Brandon Saxton, and Third Place honors were earned by Cindy Parker.

Judging criteria for the maximum 200-word essay included originality (avoids the use of trite or worn out words and phrases - 30 points), development of theme (stays focused on ideas and thoughts don't ramble- 40 points) and mechanics and neatness (uses proper spelling, grammar and punctuation - 30 points). The Marion Elks Lodge 32 will send the winning essays on to the National Elks competition.

National prizes will be awarded for winning essays in two divisions: Division 1 (combined 5th and 6th grades) and Division 2 (combined 7th and 8th grades). First Place in both divisions will win a $500 US Savings Bond, Second Place will receive $300 Savings Bonds, and Third Place will earn $200 Savings Bonds.
