It was an intense competition between the regional champions, twelve girls from all over the United States, at the Elks National Hoop Shoot held in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, April 16, 2016. After making 22 free throws, Hattie Hagedorn, Alan Shepard Elementary, Long Grove, Iowa, claimed third place by making five straight free throws in a shoot-off.

There was a tie between the first and second place National winners, Macy Richardson, Fairbury, Neb. and Rylee Sagester, Greenville, Ohio, both made 23 out of 25 free throws creating a shoot-off for first place. Richardson made 41 out of 45 shots claiming first place and Sagester made 39 out of 45 for second place.

Hagedorn and Bailey Finn, Bozeman, Mont. both made 22 out of 25 free throws creating a shoot-off for third place. In the shoot-off, Hagedorn made all five of her shots for a total of 27 out of 30 free throws claiming third place over Finn, who made 26 out of 30.

According to her mom, Hagedorn knew she loved basketball as early as 5 years old, and when asked about her experience with the Elks Hoop Shoot, Hagedorn replied, “I enjoyed it, especially meeting the other competitors, and I wouldn’t have been able to go to the Nationals without God.”

“It has been an exciting few months for our Elks members following Hattie’s Hoop Shoot journey. We are so proud of her and wish her the best as she pursues her love of basketball. We hope to see her in our 2017 Elks Hoop Shoot contest, “said Earl Oelerich, Elks Hoop Shoot chairman.
