The Jolly Corks was the original name for the Benevolent Order of the Elks (BPOE) back in 1867 New York. Like 159 years ago, jock corks, today, refer a very competitive game played amongst friends.
Each lodge in the Central District (Burien, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Olympia, Puyallup, and Tacoma) is given an oversized cork made of wood and engraved with their name on it. The object of the game is for three or more members of one lodge to visit a second lodge. When they do, they get to steal the second lodge's jolly cork. For example, on October 22, nine members of the Puyallup Elks Lodge visited the Burien Lodge and stole two of their jolly corks. By the end of the evening, Burien Lodge members shouted good natured threats while vowing to steal their cork back.
The real purpose of the jolly cork game is to encourage lodges to learn from each other while having fun. Puyallup learned about the success of Burien's restaurant and Ace of Spades game. It learned how Past Exalted Rulers (PER's) are recognized at each Burien Lodge Meeting. And how Burien makes initiations more impressive with just a change in lighting.
Thank you, Burien, for allowing Puyallup to visit your lodge.
