WILLIAM J. JERNICK FUND

The fund was established in 1982 to honor our deceased Grand Lodge Sponsor, PGER William J. Jernick. Its purpose is to assist special needs children in our communities who are under the age of 21. Monies raised are held in a trust fund modeled after the Elks National Foundation in that only the interest earned on the funds investments are available for distribution. The principle is never touched. We re-invest in the youth of our communities.

The funds are managed by a Board of Directors which is comprised of Past State Presidents of the MD, DE and DC Elks Association. Based upon the performance of the portfolio, each year the Board determines the total dollar amounts available for distribution. Last fiscal year ending, May 31, 2005, a total of $17,400 was available and allocation among the five districts and Elks Camp Barrent. Only, $10, 350 was spent which leaves an allocated and available balance of $7050. For the current fiscal year, the Board has allocated over $20,000 for distribution.

Lee Davis, our State President, has again asked each lodge to strive to achieve a per capita contribution to the Jernick Fund of $1.50 per member. And I ask that each lodge does no less and that each member consider giving a personal contribution as well! The legacy of assistance over the past 23 years is remarkable. I have personally seen how much our help means to families struggling with the staggering cost of providing medical treatment and equipment to a beloved child with special needs. When I stop and reflect about the daily challenges of faced by these families, I am overwhelmed by their courage and love. The least we, as the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, as the Best People on Earth, can do, is to provide mere financial help.
