Welcome to our Lodge!

Gerry Skidds, Exalted Ruler 2017-2018

With Labor Day just around the corner and kids heading back to school summer is quickly fading. Soon we will be trading warm summer nights and cookouts for multi-colored leaves and cooler evenings. But, I am excited about the calendar changing to September and the lodge coming alive with the Cribbage, Dart and Pool leagues beginning. Sunday meat raffles, 120 Dinner/Dance and the Friday night suppers back in full swing.   As we typically see June, July and August are slow months with respect to hall rentals. As a lodge we depend on the revenue from our private hall rentals, events put on by our Entertainment committee, member dues and support of our events to run the lodge. The Board of Directors worked hard on the annual lodge budget this year understanding that we needed to decrease our expenses and increase our revenues. However, with revenues currently running below expected levels and expenses for real estate taxes, lights, cable, phone, labor and unforeseen expenses related to equipment breakdown continuing to inch up we find ourselves looking for additional ways to cut expenses.
Not unlike other area businesses who are working daily to control expense and increase revenue we are being faced with hard choices. The lodge Board of Directors and House Committee have worked over the past several weeks to identify areas where we can decrease expenses without greatly impacting our membership and we are moving forward with a couple of these recommendations.  A change to the bartenders using a measured jigger in lieu of free pours was instituted a few weeks ago and in this month’s new letter we are announcing a change to the lodge opening times during the weekdays and weekends. (See changes in opening times on page one – under LODGE OPERATING HOURS) The thought is that this change will help decrease electrical and labor costs. While I know some members will think these changes are short sighted and will not greatly reduce expenditures, the risk of doing nothing will be far more impactful.
We will continue to look for ways to increase revenues and monitor expenses closely. I am confident that as we move into the fall and business picks up we will turn things around but as I stated in an earlier message this lodge belongs to all the members and you deserve the right to know why things are changing. I want to make sure the message is clear that we are still paying our bills and we are not closing in case that rumor gets started. We are taking steps now to avoid that decision in 5 -10 years without action.
Thank you for your continued support of our lodge.
Fraternally yours, Jerry Skidds Exalted Ruler
