Getting to Homer Along the Scenic By-Way

Homer is located 225 road miles south of Anchorage at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula. We are noted as the community "At The End Of The Road". The drive from Anchorage to Homer on the Seward Highway is most spectacular with an ever changing scenery. You will see the Cook Inlet and drive along Turnigan Arm. Then proceed through Turnigan Pass and travel through the mountains to the Homer/Kenai/Soldotna cut off and the Sterling Hwy. Traveling south along the highway you will view beautiful Kenai Lake and parallel the glacier fed Kenai River which is noted worldwide for it's King Salmon as well as record runs of Red Salmon. Fishing along the banks of the Kenai is combat fishing at its best and this will bring you to Soldotna. From there you will proceed south for another 70 miles observing vista views of Cook Inlet and finally Kachemak Bay and Homer. Here you will find lots to do and see. Fish for barn-door size halibut or troll for Kings beginning in early May. Later in the season the Silver Salmon arrive and the fishing continues on into early September. The first weekend in October, the Homer Elks Lodge sponsors our annual "Winter King Salmon Derby". It's a $100 entry fee derby and 50% of entry fees are given out in cash prizes for several catagories. If fishing is not your thing, there is plenty of sightseeing to do, including helicopter rides to the surrounding glaciers as well as brown bear viewing trips. The possibilities are as endless as you can dream. Come visit us here in Homer, Alaska and please do stop by our spectacular Lodge. We look forward to seeing you.

Fishing, Wildlife and Natural Beauty

Fishing and Wildlife are both abundant in and around the Homer area. Homer is noted as the "Halibut Capital of the World". Record halibut are caught here as well as great King Salmon, Red Salmon and Silver Salmon. This are also boasts large populations for moose and black & brown bear. Moose are seen throughout our town during the winter and early spring season until calving. Whether it's fishing, hunting, wildlife or bird viewing or just marveling at the majestic beauty of Kachemak Bay and the surrounding mountains with their glaciers, Homer has something for all.
