MESSAGE FROM OUR EXALTED RULER: Some old business first. January what a start to the year. Record cold for the first twelve days. Hopefully that is behind us now. Our New Years Eve dance was a well-attended success, with the Perfect Alibi Band. If you missed this you missed a good time. Maybe we can have Perfect Alibi back in the spring. Our chicken dinners resumed in January. Look for one in Feb on the 21st.(see calendar for this). We held our Hoop Shoot on Jan 16th, however no one qualified for the state contest that was held on the 23rd. I attended the DD clinic on the weekend of the 23rd. A lot of good information was exchanged there. On Jan. 18th we initiated two more members, hopefully we can do more in March. .Nominations for officers for the year 2010/2011 will be held at the first meeting in Feb. I will not be running for another term. The State Convention will be held Feb 18th - 20th in Catlettsburg/Ashland. If you have never attended one of these conventions I urge you to attend this one. They are not only a lot of fun but they can give you an insight as to what The Elks are all about. The Highlanders will hold their Super Bowl Party on Feb 7th. Lodge members are welcome.
Fraternally Yours

In Memoriam
In Memoriam
It is our sad duty to announce the death of our member, Michael D. Azzara. Mike joined Lodge #8 in 1969 and has always been a true and upright member. Those of us who have had the pleasure to have known him will never forget his welcoming smile, his enthusiastic conversations and his zest for life that should be a trademark for us all.
Mike’s many good deeds are forever written on the tablets of love and memory and in the minds of those who knew him.
**********************************************************
It is our sad duty to announce the death of our member, Charles Von Bokern.. A member since 1982, he was known as Charlie Chips. He earned that nickname through running a business that supplied snacks to many of the local bars. Charlie ran our kitchen for many years and provided countless dinners and meals that were always looked forward to by our members. He was a fixture at our Lodge and could always be counted on to help out with our most important events. He is no longer with us, but he will never be forgotten.
********************************************************** Our thoughts and prayers will be with Sharon Stewart over the recent loss of her Mother and Jean Duncan after the loss of her Mother-in-law
**********************************************************
It is our sad duty to announce the death of our PER, Jack Anderson. His good name will be forever linked in the history of Lodge #8 as a leader, teacher, advisor, and officer, but most of all, a gentleman.
When it became impossible for us to stay at the Broadway home in 1967, Jack, then ER, found the property we are now at, designed the unique building we occupy and managed the move into it. Soon after he was an important part of the group who conceived , designed and built our pool. His was a major voice in the revitalization of it, just several years ago.
He served in nearly all offices the Lodge has and was the most impressive Esquire we have recollection of. Just a short time before he passed, Jack donated his beautiful Hammond organ to the Lodge. He was a true and upright Elk.
Any member who ever heard him recite “The Vacant Chair” can use that to reinforce their memories of him, for as the last lines state, “Now the golden cord is severed, He has passed to realms on high.”

**LADIES' AUXILIARY**
I sure hope everyone has been warm. We do miss many members when it is this cold. Our January meeting had a low turn out, but it was a good meeting. We want to welcome our newest member Debbie Walters. It is great to have you aboard. Nancy Petito gave us the break down of the Craft Bazaar. Our profit this year is $959.47. That is fantastic! With Nancy leading the way and so many of our ladies volunteering this was truly a successful event. We will soon have the details of the raffle available. We are looking forward to the 108th annual convention of the Kentucky Elks Association, which will be February 18-21. It will be held at the Ashland Lodge #350. I look forward to seeing many of you there. On a sadder note we need to keep many of our members and Elks in our prayers. Louise Williams husband Ray lost his left leg above the knee but her son is doing better, Please keep in touch with Louise as she may need someone to lean on. Mary Hardin is doing better after hip surgery and hopes to soon be driving again. Susan Bunch is still recovering from knee surgery as is Anita Ryan, please keep them in your prayers. Lets keep my former dart partner Jimmy Smathers in our prayers as he begins his own battle with illness. Until next month please keep safe, keep warm and keep well.
