Student Wayne Barnum is going to Des Moines!

The son of one of our members Wayne Barnum, who is just finishing 10th grade at Chugiak High, has won the right to represent Alaska at the national competition in Iowa in June.  He was looking for a way to raise funds for his trip and of course, this is right up the Elks alley!  We will have a homemade spaghetti feed on Friday, May 31 at the Lodge ($10 in advance, $12 at the door; see your bartender), accompanied by a silent auction, split the pot, and maybe some other activities.  Please join us and help send this young man to Iowa!  Wayne explained this opportunity:

“My name is Wayne Barnum and I have been given the opportunity to represent Chugiak High School at the National Speech and Debate Championships in Des Moines, Iowa from June 17th to 21st.

I’ve done competitive debate for 3 years now and this would be my first time competing on a national scale. Having the privilege to both compete against and educate people on speech and debate in the state of Alaska has been the single biggest part of my life for the past few years and having the opportunity to represent not just Chugiak, but all the people that have helped me become better at my craft is the most I ever could’ve asked for out of debate.

I will be competing in International Extemporaneous Speaking which is where competitors are given a variety of topics relating to the foreign and domestic affairs of nations. Unlike a standard debate where there is a large amount of preparation, in this event, competitors are given less than half and hour to come up with a formatted, informative and argumentative speech relating to a designated topic. At DDF State, which is the name for Speech and Debate in Alaska, I was the highest ranking NSDA member in the state which qualified me for the national tournament.

To compete in the National tournament would be the culmination of all the work that both my team and I have put towards competitive speech and debate and would be the most important stepping stone for my future pursuits in public speaking.”
