National & Local Lodge 343 History

Our National Fraternal order of Elks originated on Sunday, February 16, 1868 and together, today we can proudly celebrate our National Order's 153 years of caring, sharing and patriotic service to our country!  A little Port Huron Lodge 343 history. It was decided on October 4, 1910 to purchase the original site for Lodge 343 in downtown Port Huron at corner of Pine & Military to build the Elks Temple. Construction began on October 8, 1911, with the Elks Temple opening on October 9, 1912. 30 years later, the mortgage was burned on Jan. 16, 1942.

Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 Charter was signed on Monday, April 20, 1896 (a leap year). On Tuesday, April 28, 1896, Lodge 343 held its first meeting and was organized and led by our very first Exalted Ruler Frank J. Hayes with 34 original charter members . Our National Fraternal order of Elks originated on Sunday, February 16, 1868 (also a leap year). This occurred only 28 years, 59 days after the beginning of our National order which originated on Sunday, February 16, 1868. Today we can proudly celebrate our National Order’s 153rd year of caring, sharing and patriotic service to our country. Port Huron Lodge 343 has been led by at least 97 different Exalted Rulers with many of them serving at least two terms during the past 125 years of our existents. As we all know the Elks are a fraternal organization which is focused on serving local communities, the underprivileged, special needs adults and children, our many veterans – the TRUE HERO’S, many youth groups, and various other needs specific to the St. Clair County area. Once again, together we can proudly celebrate our National Order’s 153rd year of caring, sharing and patriotic service to our country this day, month and year. Proving once again ELKS CARE - ELKS SHARE!
