Flag Day 2020!

On June 14, 1777 the Second Continental Congress adopted the original US Flag as the emblem of our country.  At the Grand Lodge convention in 1907, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated June 14th as Flag Day, and in 1911 added a mandatory observance of the date by all local Lodges.
In part due to the prompting of the Elks, in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day.  In 1949 National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress.

As Flag Day, 2020 falls on a Sunday, the Eagle River Elks intend to make this our best yet - festivities begin at 2 pm with our ritual and history of the flag; music throughout will be provided by a bagpipe played by Mark Ryan with keynote speaker Diane Peterson, Executive Director of the Alaska Police and Fire Chaplains Ministry (the organization we donated casket flags to last year).
Following the formal observance, FREE hamburgers and hotdogs will be served.  Hopefully the weather cooperates and the entire program will be conducted in the parking lot in front of the Lodge.  In the event of rain, bring an umbrella and we’ll figure it out!
