Veterans Recognized by Davenport Elks Lodge #298

(Davenport, Iowa) Among the many Veterans Day celebrations, members of Davenport Elks Lodge #298 also recognized local Veterans during two separate events on Friday, November 13, 2015.

Elks member and veteran Johnny Wright, Jr., organized a program recognizing veterans residing at the Good Samaritan Society. The color guard was provided by Blue Grass, Iowa, American Legion Post 711, a Good Samaritan employee played taps and provided a closing prayer, and three volunteer women made and presented beautiful patriotic lap robes for each veteran in the home. Mr. Wright spoke briefly and also provided Elks National Veterans Service Commission Certificates of Appreciation to each of the veteran residents for their service to our country, along with two boxes of kleenex.

Later that evening at the Elks Lodge, an open invitation had been extended to all veterans and a complimentary turkey dinner with all the trimmings was provided to all veterans who attended. More than 100 people were in attendance and approximately forty veterans were recognized and thanked for their service.

“The Elks have pledged, ‘So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them,’” said Elks’ member and veteran, Michael Thonn, who organized and cooked the Thanksgiving meal, along with family members and friends. Thonn continued, “Cooking a meal was the least we could do to say thank you for the freedom the veterans have provided us, along with all the other things we experience here in the United States because of the sacrifices they made.”

“The Davenport Lodge members also support the veterans in other ways,” said Johnny Wright, Jr. “We collect clothing, coffee, sugar, creamer, phone cards and other items and delivered them to the Veteran’s Shelter in Des Moines and to the Veteran’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.”
