Last year, Steve Jewell was a popular choice for the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Father of the Year award. On Saturday, May 11, it was his wife Julie’s turn. Julie Jewell, mother of five, grandmother of 13 – with No. 14 on the way – was honored as Mother of the Year by the fraternal organization. She was presented with a decorative sash, roses, a tiara and engraved pewter vase by 2012 Mother of the Year Cathy Voisine. As per tradition, the announcement was a surprise to the recipient. “Roger and Carol Jarvais asked us come over. I thought for sure it was going to be a mutual friend of ours,” said Julie Jewell. Exalted Ruler (lodge president) Ronald Voisine praised Julie for her dedication to her family, noting that she has been husband Steve’s caregiver for a number of years. “In addition, she helps care for her mother and Steve’s father while running the family business (Athens Corner Store) with Steve,” said Voisine. The Jewells have been married for 34 years. Many of the Jewell’s children and grandchildren were waiting in the wings until the announcement was made, and enjoyed light refreshments after the ceremony was concluded.
