More than 200 people attended a “Luck of the Draw” auction hosted by the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge on Feb. 23 to help raise more than $6,200 to help a young lady battling a rare form of cancer.
Mikayla Violette, age 10, has been diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that primarily affects children and adolescents. The money will help her family with mounting expenses related to her medical treatment.
Mikayla’s grandmother, Louann Barnes, is a past Elk of the Year and a former Mother of the Year at the Skowhegan-Madison Lodge. She teamed up with two other past Elks of the Year, Linda Laney and Roberta “Bobbi” Alley, to organize the event. “The support from the community, local businesses and the lodge was overwhelming,” said Louann.
