Golf Tournament Benefits QC Veterans

On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, Exalted Ruler John Zamora, Davenport Elks Lodge 298, presented Lola VanDeWalle, Quad City Veterans Outreach Center, a check for $15,337.00.

The funds were raised through the 2017 Davenport Elks Caring for Quad City Veterans Golf Tournament, which was held on Friday, September 22, 2017, at Emeis Golf Course. The Quad City Veterans Outreach Center was founded by VanDeWalle in November 2016 and the doors to the Center opened in January 2017. The Center serves all Veterans offering a variety of goods and services, e.g., food pantry, housing assistance, Veterans benefit counseling, job placement and more. Very excited to receive these funds, VanDeWalle said, “I’m so grateful to the Davenport Elks for choosing our Veteran’s organization to be the recipient of these funds. The needs of our Veterans are so great here in the Quad Cities; people just don’t realize. These funds will be used to provide much needed food and other items to those we serve.”

On a beautiful sunny day for golf, the tournament started off with recognition of the Elks Lodge’s five oldest Veterans, Marlin Ashcraft, Eldon Baxter, Darrell Mairet, Wallace Miller and Myron Swanson. They were each presented with an embossed money clip in recognition for their service to our country. A military honor guard then played taps and concluded the ceremony with a 21-gun salute. Golf tournament chair Carolyn Waugh commented, “It was a nice ceremony to recognize, not only our Elks’ veterans, but all veterans who have served our country, and the honor guard was very impressive. We are so grateful to our sponsors, all the golfers who participated, and the many volunteers whom made this tournament a huge success.”
