Davenport Elks Lodge #298 Supports Bridging the Gap Veterans Stand Down

The members of the Davenport Elks Lodge 298 partnered with Bridging the Gap for a one-day event in support of Veterans in need. The day started off in the morning with Veterans visiting various agency tables where they received assistance, support and essential items.

As one of the many organizations in attendance, the Elks provided each Veteran with a string bag filled with toiletries, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, razors, shaving cream, comb, sewing kit, washcloth and towel and several other items. At noon, the Elks also provided a simple meal of soup, vegetable barley and chicken noodle, sandwiches, ham, turkey and roast beef, and a dessert of cookies and brownies.

Military personnel from the Rock Island Arsenal were there to interact with the Veterans and offer their support. After lunch, Major General Edward Daly acknowledged the veterans stating, “We truly appreciate your service, and we will not forget your service.” He, also, spoke words of gratitude and encouragement to all in attendance.

As Veterans left the event, they each received a sack lunch and water to take with them provided by both Bridging the Gap and the Elks.

Davenport Elks Exalted Ruler John Zamora said, “We want to acknowledge and thank Bridging the Gap Mike Malstrom and Jeannine Mckee for all their hard work in organizing and putting on such a great Stand Down event for our Veterans. It was an honor to participate.” Zamora continued, “The Elks were happy to be able to support Bridging the Gap to make this Stand Down event a huge success for our local veterans.”
