Davenport Elks Lodge #298 Iowa State Hoop Shoot Winner Advances to Regionals

The Iowa Elks State Hoop Shoot competition was held in Grinnell, Iowa, on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Three contestants, 8-9 Year-Old Girls District Division winner Stella Smith, McKinley Elementary, Davenport, 8-9 Year-Old Boys District Division winner Navon Shabazz, Washington Elementary, and 10-11 Year-Old Boys District Division winner Drew Eller, Alan Shepard Elementary, Long Grove, traveled to Grinnell with funds provided by the Davenport Elks Lodge #298 to compete for the Iowa state title in their respective divisions.

Navon Shabazz brought his “A” game and is the Elks 8-9 Year-Old Boys Division state champion! Shabazz made 22 of 25 free throws claiming the Iowa Elks Hoop Shoot state title for his division, and Shabzz also claimed the John O’Conner Award, the overall top male free throw shooter in the state of Iowa. Drew Eller placed second in his division and Stella Smith finished third in her division.

Shabazz will advance to the North Central Regional Elks Hoop Shoot Semi-Final, held in Iowa City on Saturday, March 18, 2017, to compete against the 8-9 year-old state champion boys from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Across the country, there will be 288 state champions competing in 12 different cities for a chance to win the opportunity of a lifetime–a trip to the Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago, Ill.

We are so proud of all three of our Hoop Shotters, Navon, Drew and Stella. The kids loved the competition and had so much fun. It was tough, and they all gave it their best. As talented as they are, we hope they will all compete again next year,” said Exalted Ruler John Zamora. “As for Navon, we are looking forward to his regional competition in mid-March and wish him the best as he continues his Hoop Shoot journey. Of course, we also hope he advances to the Elks National Hoop Shoot Finals, held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, in Chicago, Ill.
