Davenport Elks Lodge #298 Hosts Its 49th Annual Hoop Shoot

The Davenport Elks Lodge #298 hosted its 49th annual Hoop Shoot on Saturday, December 3, 2016, in Davenport Central’s George Marshall Gym. More than 65 Iowa Quad Cities area 8-13 year olds qualified for the free-throw competition after competing at their individual schools.

The boys and girls were classified into their respective age groups, 8-9 year olds, 10-11 year olds and 12-13 year olds. Given a 10-minute warm-up, the 8-9 year olds started the Hoop Shoot off. With the boys on one side of the gym divided between two basketball hoops and the girls on the other, also divided between two hoops, each contestant shot 25 free-throws. The individuals making the most free throws won their division respectively, and the first place winners will move on to compete at the district level on Saturday, January 21, 2017, in Keokuk, Iowa. District winners will then compete at the state level. If they continue to win, the contestants will compete at the regional level and ultimately at the national level in Chicago, Ill. in April 2017.

Special congratulations go out to both 9 year-old Navon Shabazz from Washington Elementary School in Davenport, Iowa, and 10 year-old Drew Eller from Alan Shepard Elementary in Long Grove, Iowa, who tied for the bragging rights as the top free throw shooters in the overall Hoop Shoot contest. Hoop Shoot event chair Earl Oelerich said, “It was amazing to watch so many of our Hoop Shoot contestants make free throw after free throw. Almost half of the top contestants made 21 or more baskets out of 25. That says a lot about the talent and discipline our youth have in this area.”

The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program, through the Elks National Foundation, offers students the opportunity to engage in healthy competition, connect with their families and community and succeed both on and off the court.

Oelerich continued, “We want to especially thank all the youth who participated in this year’s Hoop Shoot program, their families who supported them and those who came to cheer them on. We hope to see many of these same contestants, along with some new faces, back next year to participate in our 50th annual Hoop Shoot.”
