Dictionaries Provided to Third Grade Students in the Davenport School District

Members of the Davenport Elks Lodge #298 are again out this fall visiting elementary schools located within the Davenport school district to provide third grade students with their own reference dictionaries. In addition to the dictionaries, the Elks members are giving the third graders Elks National Drug Awareness coloring books and bookmarks while encouraging them to say ‘no’ to drugs.

When this project is completed, more than 1,300 dictionaries and drug awareness materials will have been distributed to the school children. “We have been providing dictionaries to Davenport’s third grade students for 15 years now. Our Elk members are dedicated to this project and give selfishly of their time, effort and energy to make it happen,” said Davenport Elks Exalted Ruler John Zamora. “This is just one of the special ways we reach out to and help the kids in our community.”

The dictionaries were purchased with funds donated through an Elks’ Gratitude grant from the Elks National Foundation located in Chicago, Ill. The Elks National Foundation’s Community Investments Program allocates more than $9.77 million each year to invest in communities through Lodge grants, which help Elks members meet local needs within their communities.

Zamora continues, “According to the third grade teachers, dictionaries are still important tools for the students. And the ones we distribute are more than just dictionaries; they are great reference books. The teachers are appreciative, and the students are excited to receive one of their first and very own reference books. Our Elks members enjoy interacting with the children and are happy to invest in their education.”
