Watertown Elks Lodge Celebrates Anniversary

During 2016 the Watertown Elks Lodge will be celebrating the 115th year as an Elks Lodge and the 100th anniversary of being at their present location in the historic Concordia Opera House.  As we celebrate our anniversaries this year we hope to share more insight on the Elks and our commitment to Watertown with an article each month about the Lodge and its programs.  This month’s article is about the Watertown Elks volunteer and community activities.

Throughout the year our lodge is host to numerous community, veteran and nonprofit events and meetings, private events such as wedding receptions as well as community outreach projects.  All these events are planned, set up, staffed and executed by our members who work as volunteers.  Funding for these events comes from Elks State and National grants, donations from Elks members and the community along with what we make on building rental for some events.

This year we proudly hosted the Watertown Arts Council first annual “Spring into the Arts” event. This event was open to the community and a great opportunity to show off our beautiful lodge.   Other events included Life Line Screening a preventive health event, Wisconsin Blood Bank blood drives, free Will preparation for veterans, Veterans luncheon, Wounded Warrior Fund raiser, DARE program, free Christmas dinners served on site as well as delivered, breakfast with Santa,  Elks youth scholarships and activities, Watertown High School Post Prom, WHS Challenge day and WHS end of season banquets and more.

A community outreach project that we are very proud to offer is our Hospice Equipment. We have an extensive inventory of durable medical equipment such as hospital beds and walkers.  A single volunteer fields phone calls, then delivers this equipment to community members in need, all at no charge.  Donations of cash as well as equipment to this cause are always gladly accepted and appreciated.

We also have a number of events that guests may attend.  Most notable is our upcoming Anniversary Celebration in November.  Come be our guest!  It’s a great opportunity to see the inside of the lodge, ask questions and enjoy some cocktails and entertainment.  Other events available to guests include Open [music] Jam the 3rd Sunday of the month,  monthly Sheepshead tournaments and weekly games, Tuesday Bags league September through May,  Paint Night,  AAUW Early Childhood program, St Patrick’s Day Celebration,  and Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings the lounge bar is open to members and guests.  On these evenings, as well as any other time the bar is open, the bar is staffed with volunteers.  Throughout the month we host meetings for not only our own internal purposes but also for the Watertown Elks Ladies Auxiliary, Masons, Marines, Lions, Wisconsin Main Street Program and more.

All this would absolutely not be possible without the selfless giving of time by our volunteers! Those volunteers include but are not limited to your bartenders, cooks, ticket takers, phone call makers, setup crew, and tear down crew.

The Elks is a very philanthropic organization throughout the community and nation. It supports many youth activities, veterans programs, and community projects.  We would love to have you see what we are all about.  Joins us for our anniversary program in November featuring an open house and dinner.  Watch for more details later this year.
