Long Grove Youth Advances to Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals

The Elks North Central Regional Hoop Shoot Semi-Finals were hosted by Iowa City Regina High School in Iowa City, Ia., on Saturday, March 19, 2016. The Hoop Shoot state champions, twenty-four boys and girls ages 8 – 13 from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, convened for a free-throw contest to determine which six would advance on to the Elks Hoop Shoot National finals held in Chicago, Ill. on April 16, 2016.

Hattie Hagedorn, Alan Shepard Elementary, Long Grove, Iowa, is one of 72 of the nation’s best free throw shooters. Her drive to succeed advanced her through the local, district and state levels of competition, and now the regional level sinking 25 out of 25 free throws in Saturday’s 10-11 Year-Old Girls Division. Hagedorn nailed her chance to shoot at the National Finals.

A fitting honor, Hagedorn also received The Dick Froeschle Award, named in his memory and symbolic of the best overall shooter in the girls’ division. Mr. Dick Froeschle, in 1967, started an Elks local free throw contest in the Davenport school system with about 500 shooters. He then helped organize the program for the State of Iowa and served as a local, state and regional director until 1992.

Continuing with Hagedorn’s accolades though no physical award was given, Hagedorn was the top overall shooter at Saturday’s competition, of both the boys and girls divisions.

The Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals tip off on Saturday, April 16, 2016, in Chicago, Ill, where the 72 regional finalists will compete in their respective divisions to sink the most of 25 free throws and claim the title of the 2016 Elks Hoop Shoot National Champion. Funded by the Elks National Foundation, the Elks Hoop Shoot offers youth an opportunity to compete, connect and succeed through hard work and healthy competition both on and off the court.
