Davenport Elks #298 Members Decorate Cookies and Make Cards with Neighborhood Children

Members of Davenport Elks Lodge #298 partnered with staff from Smart Intermediate School and members from the WestEnd Initiative on Thursday, February 11, 2016, for an evening educational event. The staff from Smart Intermediate organized and hosted an educational seminar for single moms to teach them how to prepare healthy make-a-head meals.

Dinner was provided by members of the WestEnd Initiative for the families, and the Elks provided dessert to top off the meal. After eating, the adults were dismissed to a classroom, and the children joined with the Elks to decorate cookies and make cards for Valentine’s Day. Each child was encouraged to decorate cookies to take home to share with their family members and then also decorate additional cookies to give away to someone special for Valentine’s Day, e.g. grandparents, neighbors, or special friends. After decorating cookies, the kids made cards to share. The cookies and cards were provided for by funds from the Promise Grant.

Elks members had a great time with the kids. Due to time constrictions, not all of the cookies were decorated. When the kids heard the extra cookies were going to be given to the Salvation Army’s Homeless Shelter, they wanted to decorate some to give to the homeless. They also made Valentine’s Day cards to share with the Shelter residents.

At the end of the evening, the parents took home two meals to freeze and use at a later date, and the kids their cookies.
