The Lodge Horn - April 2017

The Horn News – April 2017

Exalted Ruler - As we enter into this new year of ELKdom, I can certainly say I am a bit excited and looking forward to the future. There are some new ideas that will be presented along the way that will benefit the lodge, our special children, and of course our veterans.  I personally wELKome more of the membership to come to our general meetings where you can stay informed about events and ways you can participate. One of the first projects I will reveal is the advent of The Clayton Elks #2132 Motorcycle Committee which has been approved and accepted on the state level. The committee is in its infancy stage so we are currently learning to “crawl” before we can ride for our special children. It will take some time and effort to get things up and running. Our first Motorcycle Committee meeting will be May 10th at 7pm in the lodge. All interested individuals can sign up on the inner door of the social quarters and/or simply show up.  I would like to personally wELKome all our new officers of the lodge and ladies’ auxiliary who were installed this past Sunday. I would like to send a special thank you to all honored guests, family, and friends who shared this special occasion and I look forward to working together to help the lodge reach our full potential.  Remember: ELKs care, ELKs share, and all members contribute to our success.

Doug Freund, Exalted Ruler

Ladies Auxiliary - The Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a Spring Fling Auction on Sunday, May 7th at 2pm.  This fun-filled event will include an auction, Premier   jewelry sale, and basket raffle.  Light refreshments will be served.   We are asking for donations to help make this event a great success.  We need new or gently used household items, toys, games, decorations, crafts, etc. to auction off at the event (no clothing please).  We would also appreciate basket donations, gift cards, or other items for the raffle.  If you would like to donate, please call Donna Fox at (865) 697-4946 to arrange pick up. We need your donations as soon as possible.  Thank you in advance for your help with what is sure to be a great fundraising event!  The Ladies Auxiliary is available for catering events.  Please call (856) 697-4946 for more details. Donna Fox, President

PER Committee - Shuffleboard takes place every Tuesday night at 6:30pm.  No experience necessary to play.  We will teach you what you need to know!  It’s a fun evening and a great way to meet other members.  It would be great to see some new faces join us this year!  We hope you will consider coming out and joining in the fun! Wayne Bruce, PER

Float - We will have a float in the Memorial Day parade and for the   convention.  Our plan is to create a float honoring our military.  We are asking for pictures of people who have served in the armed forces from our community. We need these pictures ASAP. Digital copies can be sent to the Horn email @ 2132horn@comcast.net.  If you have a regular photo, we would appreciate it if you would put it in an envelope addressed to “Float Committee”.  Please write your name and phone number on the envelope and leave it at the lodge.  We are having a float committee meeting on April 5th at 7:30pm at the lodge.  Please consider coming out and sharing your ideas/talents. Thanks, in advance for your help with these projects!

Ritual - Our Lodge excels in performing the rituals of Elkdom.  We are habitually at the top of the South District, and usually rank high in ritual competitions held for Elk Lodges all over the State of New Jersey.  But it is not about the ability of Clayton Lodge 2132 to "win" in these competitions that is most important; rather it is our commitment to the rituals themselves.  Rituals are (per Wikipedia) "a series of activities...performed in a ...[closed] space and ...[in] a set sequence."  They are prescribed by the traditions of a community, including a religious community.  Rituals remind us of where we have come from, who we are, what we believe, and what traits we value. When we go through rituals at meetings of our Lodge and at other Elk events, we remind ourselves of, AND we celebrate, traditions and values dating to the founding of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in 1868 and, in our community of Clayton, to the founding of our Lodge in 1959.

Things that Happened

Lodge By-Law Change - At our regular meeting on March 27th, the proposed by-law change was passed.  A House Committee consisting of 7 members will be responsible for the Social Quarters (business part of lodge) and the Board of Directors will focus on the property and the charitable work we do.

Sickness and Distress - Please send brotherly love to several of our members whose mothers passed away recently.  Duke Collins, Christine Brown, and Joe White all lost their mothers in March.  Please keep Bill Latham in your thoughts and prayers.  He lost his daughter recently.  Please also send brotherly love to       Stephanie Fazzio who lost her father and Sue Zingler whose father passed away 3 weeks before his 100th birthday.  Please keep Carl Price in your thoughts.  He has been in and out of the hospital for respiratory problems.

Elks National Foundation - Please consider contributing to the ENF.  Our lodge is currently #1 in our district and #5 in the state for donations per capita.  Our lodge receives grant money from the national foundation to      support our programs and charitable causes.  Unlike other       charities, 100% of your contribution goes into the fund.  Our lodge was able to award 33 book scholarships to local high school seniors this year.  This is 13 more than we gave last year.
