Ferndale, MI. Through an indoor miniature golf tournament, a teen karaoke party, and a golf-club raffle, Ferndale Lodge recently raised more than $2,100 for Meredith Simmons, a 17-year-old high school student who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment, to help out with her medical expenses. Many Lodge members were most impressed by the singing talent of Meredith and her friends from the local madrigal choir. In other news, Ferndale Lodge and the Southeast Oakland Coalition held their Family Fun Nite at Ferndale High School. More than 500 youngsters and adults attended the event and enjoyed swimming, miniature golf, karaoke singing, dancing, soccer shoot-outs, basketball free-throw contests, and many other activities.

Attleboro, MA, Lodge held its annual Frank T. Zarek Memorial Youth Fishing Derby recently. For the event, which is in its 36th year, the Lodge provided each young participant with a fishing bag filled with supplies and also served hot dogs and soft drinks. Paradise, CA. Abram Neitling was recently named a recipient of Paradise Lodge's Charles H. Mann Memorial Scholarship Award, which is given to outstanding young men and women studying police and fire sciences. Neitling was designated for the honor because of his academic achievement-he had the top standing in his class-at the Butte College 31st Fire Science Academy. Kinderhook, NY. A chicken barbecue fund-raiser recently held by Kinderhook Lodge benefited five-year-old Jake Powell, a youngster who has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Cranberry, PA, Lodge, seeing a real need that it could fulfill in its community, recently pledged its support to the Butler County Domestic Abuse Shelter. The Lodge has donated clothing, toys, and personal care products to the shelter and plans to invite children staying there to its future holiday functions.

Albert Lea, MN, Lodge recently honored three new Eagle Scouts, Jacob Stockwell, Joe Cooper, and Stewart Hatch of Troop No. 219. In addition to congratulating these fine young men for attaining Boy Scouting's highest rank, the Lodge also honored Lodge member and Assistant Scoutmaster Alton Qunvold for his more than 20 years of dedicated service to the troop. Lompoc, CA, Lodge honored 32 students from Lompoc and Cabrillo High Schools at a recent awards banquet held at the Lodge. The youths were recognized for their academics, leadership qualities, community service activities, athletic accomplishments, and fine-art talents, among other things. The Lodge also presented two of the students with plaques and $500 scholarships.

In other news, Lompoc Lodge prepared and served more than 950 barbecued chicken dinners as part of a fund-raiser benefiting the Lompoc Valley Middle School Music Department. More than $2,000 was raised by the Lodge to replace old instruments, purchase new sheet music, and pay for travel expenses.

Ballard (Seattle), WA, Lodge recently held a coin box dinner to benefit the State Major Project, in-home therapy services for children. Approximately $1,200 was raised, and Lodge members and their guests learned about the duties that therapists perform during an in-depth presentation given by therapist Denise Machut.

Flemington, NJ, Lodge celebrated its 45th anniversary recently in a very big way, honoring its charter members and holding an open house for community residents and organizations. Local fire, police, and emergency services personnel, the local parks and recreation department, national and international high school cheerleading champions, and others attended the open house and received hospitality, gratitude, and donations from the Lodge, while its ladies auxiliary donated $1,500 to Elks Camp Moore, the State Major Project, and $4,500 to other charitable organizations during the event. Also, the Lodge presented plaques to four youths who had been named special education students of the year. New Orleans West Bank, LA, Lodge hosted a program to honor the participants of its many youth programs recently, congratulating its scholarship winners, Karla Melendes and Blair Duhon, and presenting trophies to many young athletes. Red Wing, MN, Lodge recently donated a golf cart to the Minnesota Youth Camp, the State Major Project. The camp accepts children between the ages of 9 and 13 who would otherwise not be able to afford a camping experience.

Lynn, MA. Many youngsters wrote great essays on "What the Pledge of Allegiance Means to Me" for Lynn Lodge's Americanism essay contest, and the Lodge recently honored the first- and second-place winners at their schools. Deep Creek, FL, Lodge recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new Lodge home. More than 300 Lodge members and guests attended the event.

Oakmont, PA, Lodge recently named Lauren Amato as the winner of one of its annual $400-a-year scholarships. Lauren, the daughter of Lodge member Frank Amato, will receive the award for four years.

Red Bank, NJ, Lodge recently helped support the Jersey Shore Marathon, a 26-mile run and 15-kilometer walk-a-thon that benefited the Ronald McDonald House, the March of Dimes, and the Leukemia Society of America. During the event the Lodge operated a booth to provide the more than 1,500 walkers and runners with water and sports drinks.

In other news, Red Bank Lodge held its Youth Day Awards Program, celebrating its scholarship recipients, student-athletes, members of the Rumson Police Explorer Post No. 15 and Cub Scout Pack No. 233, and Peer Leadership Conference attendees. Fourteen students were awarded $4,600 in scholarships, and four of the students-Michelle Schork, Laura Dannen, Adam Steinhorn, and Kelly Ziegler-were also winners of four-year, $1,000-a-year Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" scholarships.

Bedford, VA. Board of Grand Trustees Home Member James Robbins and his wife, Gerry, recently continued a tradition practiced by many home members and donated a tree to the Elks National Home. Pictured in front of the tree are Gerry and James Robbins.

Green Valley, AZ, Lodge threw a party to mark its 20th birthday recently. Among the many things that the Lodge had to celebrate were an impressive growth in membership over the two decades, the many youth and charitable activities that it supports in its community, and its 1995-96 designation as an All-American Lodge.

Grand Rapids, MI, Lodge recently held its sixth annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Golf Outing, which saw participation from 140 officers of the Grand Rapids and Walker Police Departments as well as from officers of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. The Lodge hosted a dinner for the officers and distributed prizes following the great day of golfing, thanking the honorees for their self-sacrificing spirit.

Mission Viejo-Saddleback Valley, CA, Lodge recently made a donation of more than $21,000 to the State Major Project, in-home therapy services for disabled children and vision screenings for preschoolers, during the state convention of the California-Hawaii Elks Association. While at the meeting, Lodge members had the opportunity to meet Jonathan Reynoso, the theme child for the State Major Project. Dallas, TX, Lodge recently held its annual Law and Order Night to honor members of the Dallas Police Department. This year's honorees were Senior Cpls. Tom Cicio and John McGuire, who were both presented with plaques by the Lodge for going above and beyond the call of duty. The Lodge also made a donation of $500 to the Dallas Blue Foundation, a fund for the families of slain or disabled officers. Pictured are (from left) Sgt. R. C. Port Huron, MI, Lodge recently hosted an awards banquet for two great young ladies as they received their Girl Scout Silver Awards. The Lodge presented each of the girls, Melissa Golec and Jaime Kunnath, with a U.S. flag and a certificate of recognition.

Nevada City, CA, Lodge recently generated more than $1,000 for the State Major Project, vision screenings for preschoolers and in-home therapy services for disabled children. The monies were raised by sponsoring Maria Angulo, wife of ER Al Angulo, in a local 12-kilometer race.

Canoga Park, CA, Lodge members were elated to have the privilege of meeting Staff Sgt. Andrew Ramirez, a Kosovo conflict prisoner of war, during the recent Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade. Kansas City (Northland), MO, Lodge held its annual scholarship breakfast recently, serving approximately 1,000 breakfasts over two days to generate educational funds. This year the Lodge awarded $7,000 in scholarships to five local youths, and two of its winners also received state awards.

International Falls, MN. For the third consecutive year, International Falls Lodge hosted the local high school prom. To make the special evening memorable for the 180 students in attendance, the Lodge provided valet parking, coat-check service, hors d'oeuvres, and nonalcoholic refreshments. And not to be wasteful, the following evening the Lodge made additional use of the beautiful decorations by hosting a senior citizens prom for the residents of four nursing homes. The magical night featured festive line dancing.

Kokomo, IN. Working on behalf of the American Cancer Society, Kokomo Lodge recently held its 44th annual Door-to-Door Cancer Drive, raising more than $12,800 with the help of more than 500 volunteers. The monies will be used to fund cancer research and education.

In other news, Kokomo Lodge presented $500 scholarships to Andrew Eller and Brittany Fitzgerald. An additional $1,000 each was presented to the young scholars from the Indiana Elks Association.

Cocoa, FL, Lodge recently honored the winners of its Americanism essay contest, which saw many youths participating in the fifth/sixth-grade and seventh/eighth-grade divisions. A $100 savings bond was awarded to each first-place winner, and $50 savings bonds were presented to the second- and third-place winners. Inverness, FL, Lodge held its annual golf tournament recently. The day on the links raised $1,700 for the Hernando Elementary School and $950 for the Inverness Boys and Girls Club.

In other news, Inverness Lodge participated in a lottery to generate monies for Florida's State Major Projects. The Lodge raised more than $5,800 during the raffle.

Virginia. At the recent Virginia Elks Association's state convention, then GER C. Valentine Bates had a fine time visiting with many friendly Elks and learning about the charitable activities of the state association. The GER also had the honor of accepting a $2,500 donation from Hampton Lodge for the Oklahoma-Kansas Disaster Relief Fund. Lyndhurst, NJ, Lodge recently hosted a Court of Honor ceremony for new Eagle Scout Darren Marquart, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 97. The Lodge presented Darren with a plaque and a U.S. flag and also held a dinner for him, which was attended by more than 100 friends, family members, and local dignitaries. Payson, AZ. During a recent high school graduation ceremony, Payson Lodge awarded $500 scholarships to Sarah Scott, Shawna McCarty, Jacob Goble, and Cameron Omoto, all top-notch students. The Lodge's bingo proceeds provided the monies for the awards. In addition, the Arizona Elks Association awarded $950 scholarships to Joy Stidham and Ryan Bowling.

Henderson/Green Valley, NV. Nevada State Elks Association scholarship recipients Ashley Price and Julian Rios, Henderson Heritage Days Pageant First Runner-up Rebecca Chew, and Lodge-sponsored Eagle Scout candidate Miguel Sanchez were the special guests at Henderson/Green Valley Lodge's recent Youth Banquet. The Lodge presented each young person with a certificate of achievement for being such solid citizens.

Seminole, FL, Lodge was excited to learn that one of its Americanism essay contest winners, Catherine Killalea, also won the state competition. For her essay Catherine received a $700 savings bond, a $100 cash award, and the opportunity to read her essay aloud at the Florida Elks state convention. In other news, the Lodge honored Seminole Police Department Cpl. Darren Romero for his community service, presenting him with a plaque and an engraved letter opener at a ceremony held at the Lodge.

Phoenix West, AZ, Lodge hosted its Youth Appreciation Banquet recently and honored its six scholarship winners, 20 other exemplary young persons, and the participants of its youth programs. A total of $2,100 in scholarships was awarded by the Lodge.

Ontario, CA. Fifteen young people, all Elks scholarship winners, were recently feted by Ontario Lodge at an awards ceremony. The scholarships, which all together totaled $15,000, included eight given by the Lodge and one four-year, $1,000-a-year Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" award, won by Andrea Neely.

Kona, HI, Lodge recently held a special ceremony for the youths who had participated in its many programs. Among those attending the event, which included a prime-rib dinner, were four Eagle Scouts, the members of three award-winning JROTC color guards, and the Lodge's scholarship recipients and student-athletes. The Lodge presented the honorees with certificates and U.S. flags.

Toledo, OR. To reward 350 students from Toledo High School for their help with a food drive, Toledo Lodge treated the youths to a festive picnic, serving hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, and soft drinks at a local park. Working with the teenagers, the Lodge had collected 16,000 pounds of food items to distribute to the needy in the community.

San Francisco, CA, Lodge recently worked with the Christmas in April organization to renovate the Inner Sunset Stepping Stones Daycare Center. The renovation project marked the sixth time the Lodge has assisted Christmas in April in sprucing up local centers and residences.

In other news, San Francisco Lodge honored four young men of Lodge-sponsored Boy Scout Troop No. 343 as they attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Bryce Doyle, Joe Hazard, Greg Kapovich, and Conrad Seeto were each presented with a U.S. flag and a certificate of recognition. Also of note, the Lodge hosted an interactive workshop with community youths on health, safety, and labor laws that apply to young people, and the San Francisco Elks allowed students from La Honda Middle School to "camp out" in the Lodge while they were on a field trip to the City by the Bay.

Delray Beach, FL. Brooke Rosenzweig of Atlantic Community High School was presented with a $500 scholarship by Delray Beach Lodge at its recent High School Seniors Awards Night. The Lodge had named Brooke as the scholarship winner for being an outstanding student and for exemplifying the principles of Elkdom.

San Bernardino, CA, Lodge recently hosted a dinner to honor its scholarship winners and their families and to thank the many guidance counselors who had helped the Lodge with its scholarship program. The Lodge presented a total of $3,400 in scholarships to students Brian Kim, Kelly Cooper, Raylea Lightburn, Ryan Ferguson, Elizabeth Pride, Michael Murad, and Patricia Smith. Brian and Kelly each received an additional award of $1,000 from the district and state, while Raylea was given $1,200 from the district and state. On the national level, both Brian and Ryan were named as recipients of a four-year, $1,000-a-year Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" scholarship, and Joshua Milne was granted a $1,000 Legacy Award. East Liverpool, OH. Thanks to East Liverpool Lodge, the East Liverpool Police Department recently received new equipment that will aid it in the apprehension of criminals. With a grant from the Ohio Elks Association, the Lodge donated to the department a set of Stop Sticks, a device valued at nearly $400 that is used during vehicle pursuits to slow down suspects. The Lodge plans to outfit all of the city's police vehicles with these devices.

Latrobe, PA, Lodge held its annual Cerebral Palsy Golf Tournament recently. The event raised $8,150 for those affected by the condition.

Las Vegas, NV, Lodge recently honored Eagle Scout Ronald Henze III of Troop No. 144 at his Court of Honor ceremony, presenting him with a U.S. flag and a certificate of achievement. At 13 years old, Ronald is one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in his troop, and he's also a second generation Eagle Scout. Pictured with Ronald is ER Keith Dennison.

Tyrone, PA, Lodge began a teacher-of-the-year awards program recently to recognize dedicated educators. William Harshman was named the inaugural winner of the award, and at a banquet held in his honor the Lodge presented him with a plaque to commemorate his more than 30 years of work in education.

In other news, Tyrone Lodge held its annual Youth Recognition Banquet to congratulate many young men and women for their accomplishments in academics and athletics. The banquet featured guest speaker Sid Bream, a former Pittsburgh Pirate.

Springfield, NJ. During a raffle held by the Northwest District to benefit handicapped children, Springfield Lodge raised more than $1,300 for the cause. The Lodge presented the money during the district's annual charity ball.

Frackville, PA, Lodge recently honored new Eagle Scout Gregory Gricoski, presenting him with a certificate of achievement. For his Eagle Scout project, Gregory, grandson of PER Al Gricoski, constructed a nature trail at a community park.

Mahwah, NJ. More than 80 happy children took part in Mahwah Lodge's recent fishing derby, during which young Kacie Kiel won a fishing pole. After spending some time angling, the participants were treated to a picnic lunch at the Lodge.

Westbrook, CT, Lodge presented scholarships to two high school students at its recent Flag Day social. Melissa Meehan and William Weiss were thrilled to receive the educational awards. In other news, Westbrook Lodge's months of organizing a Flag Day parade for its community paid off as the event received a lot of support. Marching with the Lodge were local veterans, Boy and Girl Scouts, school bands and drum corps, and law enforcement officials, and afterward the Lodge treated the participants to a lunch of hot dogs and soft drinks.

Hoquiam, WA, Lodge held a Therapy Night recently and presented five-year-old Oswald Alavez, who is currently undergoing in-home therapy for cerebral palsy as part of the Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children, the State Major Project, with a specially designed tricycle. The monies for the tricycle were generated through the fund-raising efforts of Hoquiam Lodge, Aberdeen Lodge, and the Washington State Elks Association. Plantation, FL, Lodge held its annual golf tournament recently. More than 130 golfers hit the fairways and raised approximately $1,000 for the Florida State Major Projects and for the Lodge's Youth Activities Committee.

Vallejo, CA. Many of the finest middle school and high school bands from northern California recently participated in the 14th annual City of Vallejo Band Festival, competing for trophies that were donated by Vallejo Lodge. The youths competed in several categories, including parade, concert, jazz, percussion, and drill teams.

In other news, Vallejo Lodge donated $1,000 to the Church on the Hill's Outreach '99 program, a project that assists the community's needy by providing food, clothing, school supplies, health screening, immunizations, and information on drug abuse, infant care, and housing.

Twin Cities, FL, Lodge recently presented Doug Stein with a $400 savings bond for his thoughtful essay on Americanism. Doug's essay took third place in the Florida State Elks Association's Americanism essay contest.

Grants Pass, OR, Lodge held its second annual Law Enforcement and Firefighter Awards Banquet recently. More than 200 Lodge members, guests, and city, county, and state employees attended the banquet to recognize the efforts of nine public safety officials, who received plaques from the Lodge. The honorees had been selected from a list of nominations made by their supervisors.

Arlington-Fairfax, VA, Lodge recently donated $500 to the Children's Cancer Fund, $100 to the Leukemia Society of America, and $200 to a local fire department to be used toward the purchase of helmets that will allow firefighters to locate individuals in smoke-filled rooms. The Lodge hopes that its donations will help to make others healthier and safer.

Wadena, MN, Lodge recently sponsored and presented the first-place trophies to the 12 champions of the regional Youth Golden Glove Tournament, who advanced to competition at the Minnesota State Youth Golden Glove Tournament. Thousand Oaks, CA. More than 100 Elks and guests recently attended a ceremony to applaud Thousand Oaks Lodge's scholarship winners. The outstanding youths-David Chao, Paymon Rahgozar, Daniel Bronstein, Erin Hyon, Rachel Barnes, and Ryanne Prins-received a total of $12,200 in scholarship funds, including $2,600 from the Lodge, and David and Paymon were honored for winning four-year, $1,000-a-year Elks National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" scholarships. Houston, TX, Lodge recently displayed 50 U.S. flags on a main city thoroughfare for Memorial Day. The Lodge has proudly created the display on patriotic occasions for many years.

Billerica, MA, Lodge was paid a visit recently by the Billerica Special Olympics team, which thanked the Elks for their sponsorship. The Lodge presented the team's members with new uniforms and wished them all the best in their upcoming competitions.

Ste. Genevieve, MO, Lodge held a banquet for its scholarship winners recently. Donald Roth and Sara McDee each received a two-year scholarship from the Lodge, while Julie Dunker and Darryl Phaff were awarded four-year scholarships. Additionally, Michael Rozier received a scholarship from the Elks National Foundation.

In other news, Ste. Genevieve Lodge donated $500 to the local Babe Ruth Baseball League. The monies will be used to deck the youths out in new uniforms.

Deer, MT, Lodge knows that bicycle safety is important, and because of its efforts more than 50 youngsters know it too. The Lodge's recent bicycle safety program was led by two police officers who taught the children proper bicycle maintenance as well as the rules of the road, and each cyclist in attendance received a safety helmet that was provided by the Lodge's ladies auxiliary. Also, four new bicycles were given as door prizes, and after the program the children enjoyed a lunch of pizza and soft drinks.

Fairfield, IA, Lodge recently honored Randy Fleig by naming him the recipient of its Elks Outstanding Youth Citizen Award. Fleig was chosen based on his more than 18 years of work with local Little League teams and his constant efforts to provide quality programs for the community's youngsters. The Lodge presented Fleig with a plaque during its Youth Banquet.

Tracy, CA, Lodge recently held an awards ceremony to honor the winners of its essay scholarship contest as well as local Cub, Girl, and Boy Scouts. The Lodge awarded a total of $1,900 in scholarships to Michael Charest, Laura Johnston, Tamrym Harmon, Tim Wells, Jennifer Carter, and Steven Lyon, who also received scholarships totaling $3,200 from the California-Hawaii Elks Association. The Lodge also honored Girl Scout cadets Crissy Hucko and Mia San Julian for attaining Girl Scouting's Silver Award and Cub Scouts Zachary Van Buskirk and Patrick Hucko for receiving the Arrow of Light. Oceanlake, OR, Lodge recently held a dance recital to generate funds for breast cancer research. The performance, which was choreographed by a Lodge member, raised more than $600, and a wonderful time was had by everyone.

El Centro, CA. More than 150 community residents, including Mayor David Dhillon and leaders of all the public safety and law enforcement agencies in Imperial County, recently gathered at El Centro Lodge for its Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony. The solemn program, which touched and moved everyone in attendance, honored the more than 14,500 men and women who heroically gave their lives in the service and protection of others.

Lincoln, NE, Lodge recently participated in a Court of Honor ceremony for Eagle Scout Peter Zimmer of Troop No. 64. To celebrate Peter's achievement in Boy Scouting, the Lodge presented him with a U.S. flag. Calabash, NC. Boy Scout Troop No. 201 recently received more than $1,300 toward the purchase of a much-needed camping trailer thanks to a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser held by Calabash Lodge. More than 300 members, spouses, and guests attended the event, and the highlight of the evening was the presentation of an Eagle Scout certificate to troop member Scott Louis Mason. Aripeka, FL. More than 40 Little League baseball players recently took part in a scrumptious breakfast hosted by Aripeka Lodge. The Lodge's bingo fund made the event possible and also has been used to support many organizations and programs as of late, including the Hernando-Pasco Hospice, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Alzheimer's Association, local scholarships, the Elks National Foundation, and the Oklahoma-Kansas Disaster Relief Fund. These contributions totaled $7,500.

In other news, Aripeka Lodge has obtained scholarships so that 24 boys and girls can attend the Florida Elks Youth Camp, a State Major Project. The Lodge also cleaned up a two-mile stretch of highway that the Aripeka Elks have adopted.
