Who's Engaged?

Elks scholars, that’s who! Elks scholars gave back to their communities when home for the holidays by volunteering with their local Lodges. Read about three scholars who volunteered with their Elks family this winter. Is your Lodge looking for volunteers for an upcoming service project? Eloi Le Roux

Sponsored by Ormond Beach, Fla., Lodge No. 2193

Elks scholars Erika Barger, a recent law school graduate and member of the Ormond Beach Lodge, and Eloi Le Roux, a 2013 fourth-place MVS winner, joined other Ormond Beach Elks for the Lodge’s annual Children’s Christmas Party on December 21. Together, Elks and scholars ensured a great time was had by all.

Matthew Ramos
2013 Most Valuable Student Scholar
Sponsored by Carmichael, Calif., Lodge No. 2103

On December 22, Elks scholar Matthew Ramos volunteered with the Carmichael Lodge. Together, thanks to a Community Investments Program Gratitude Grant, they prepared and distributed more than 125 boxes of food to feed more than 600 people. Each box also included kids’ toys and games. Matthew looks forward to volunteering with the Lodge in the future.

“While in San Luis Obispo, I have connected with the Elks scholars on campus, helped the local Lodge with its haunted house for Halloween, and assisted with the college night held at the Lodge,” says Matthew. “It has been really nice to have the opportunity to provide service to others, especially while establishing myself in my new surroundings.”

David Long
2011 Most Valuable Student Scholar
Sponsored by Arvada, Colo., Lodge No. 2278

Elks scholar David Long, a junior at the Colorado School of Mines, has been involved with his Elks family for several years. This December, he joined Elks from nearby Golden, Colo., Lodge No. 2740 in supporting local families in need by providing them with baskets of food for entire families and gifts for the children. After an evening of packing baskets, David joined the Elks for a potluck dinner.

The Elks National Foundation provides $3.74 million in college scholarships each year. Today’s Elks scholars can be tomorrow’s Elks. Be sure to include Elks scholars from your Lodge in Lodge events and service projects.
