Q: How did you choose to attend the University of Utah and how did you pick your major?
A: I wanted to go to a bigger school and I chose to stay in Utah because the price was more reasonable. Also, the University of Utah has an awesome graphic design program. I wanted to do something with computers, and that was back when computers were just starting to be used as an art tool. My sister told me about the graphic design program, and I thought that’s perfect! I still love it. I love creating.
Q: What have you been up to since graduation?
A: After I graduated, I worked part-time in graphic design, and I’ve done a lot of my own freelance work. Recently, I started a new business, which I’m really excited about. It’s perfect because it requires a lot of graphic design. It’s called Run Backcountry, and it’s a racing event. We create races and put them on in the back country in Utah and Nevada. It’s been really exciting for me because I get to create the website, logos, advertisements, signs and apparel. It’s a full time job and I get to be the boss.

Q: What was your favorite memory from attending the Elks Convention?
A: It’s hard to pick one favorite memory because the whole thing was absolutely amazing. What I came away with was a perspective past college. It made me think “Now what are you going to do with your college experience? How are you going to help the world?” It helped me set new goals to do something with my college experience.
Q: What advice do you have for other Elks scholars?
A: To make sure they are studying something they love and to take full advantage of what they’re learning. Think ahead—what are you going to do after graduation, and how does what you’re doing apply to the real world.
Q: What is an interesting fact about you that most people would find surprising or unexpected?
A: I’ve run five marathons. Also, I’m married now and have four kids!
