State Major Project - Copper Cannon Camp Suspends Season

Dear Fellow Elks,

The safety of our campers and staff is and always has been, Copper Cannon Camp’s number one priority. Unfortunately, with so many unknowns due to the Covid19 virus, Copper Cannon will be closing our overnight summer camp for 2020. We know this is hard on everybody and we will get through this together.

The decision to close camp has not been taken lightly. We have waited as long as possible before making that choice. Almost daily, our staff have participated in Zoom meetings, town halls, reviewing guidelines from the American Camping Association and CDC as well as having conversations with other camp directors. It is a decision which saddens us, but one that we will get through and similar to low ropes at camp, we will persevere becoming stronger.

We will miss our opening night campfires, the skits during River Box Theater. Friday nights will not be the same without a meadow full of campers and staff as I listen to their joy and laughter flipping burgers over the grill. The pond will be waiting for those brave enough enjoying our Polar Plunge before breakfast or jumping for a ball from the dock. The singing carabineer is still being passed around and will return with a vengeance next summer! GaGa and Bombardment will still be here when we return. 2021 will be the best summer yet.

The hardest part for me is knowing for some of these children, this is the one bright spot of their lives and we will not be there for them. How can I tell a child you need to stay 6 feet from me and I cannot give you a handshake, a pat on the back or that all important hug?

Stay safe.

Sincerely,

Peter Christnacht Executive Director
