The Bergenfield Elks, together with other Elks Lodges, hosted an essay contest on "What does the flag of the United States mean to me?" for students throughout the county and district. Over 600 entries were counted into the contest, over 1/3 of those from Bergenfield. The winners are as follows:

1st Place: Stanley Lalata, 5th grade, Gilbert Avenue School, Elmwood Park

2nd Place: James Schmitt, 6th grade, St. Leo's School, Elmwood Park

3rd Place: Meet Parrikk, 5th grade, Westbrook School, Paramus

4th Place: Britney Mattessick, 7th grade, Westbrook School, Paramus

5th Place: Jason Pflveger, 7th grade, Thomas Jefferson School, Paramus

6th Place: Mark Behmer, 7th grade, Westbrook School Paramus.

The Bergenfield Americanism Committee would like to thank everyone who submitted their essays and participated in the contest. The New Jersey Elks found it to be a very tough decision to pick the winners, for all of those who submitted were very good essays. The Elks are proud of all of those who participated and were excited to see so many patriotic students.
