MADISON – The Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge Annual “Hoop Shoot” is set for Sunday, Jan. 8 at Madison Memorial High School starting at noon. The free throw contest is open to boys and girls, ages 8 to 13. There are six age groups in the competition: boys age 8-9, girls age 8-9, boys age 10-11, girls age 10-11, boys age 12-13 and girls age 12-13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals. The winners of Skowhegan-Madison Lodge contests will advance to the Central District finals at Cony High School in Augusta on Sunday, Jan. 15. The District winners then compete in the state contest, also held at Cony High School, on Sunday, Jan. 29. In last year’s competition, the Skowhegan-Madison Lodge had two Central District winners: Marcus Christopher in the 8-9 year old division and Colby Esty in the 10-11 year old class. Colby went on to win the State Championship and finished second in the New England Regional competition. A Westbrook youngster, Henry Westphal, was honored at the Elks National Convention in Phoenix, Ariz. last summer for being the best male Elks free-throw shooter in the nation.
