Charity Classic 2002

Charity Classic 2002-Dean Davis

The preparations began early on November 16th for the home stretch in this years charity classic. The charity classic for those who have ever been to one is our primary yearly fund raiser every year. We combine a wine and cheese social with the excitement of both a live and silent auction. The preparations are exhausting and this year were spearheaded by Kathy Shelts who oversaw the whole thing. She and her team worked many Monday nights
sanding, painting and planning the major craft projects that will be auctioned tonight. They all deserve our thanks. Before the auction actually begins however many objects have to be labeled with bid lists for the silent auction, more than 150 items some twelve tables worth. Also >50 items need to be hung on the lodge
walls and numbered for bidding. Two tables have to be set up for the food items that will be arriving all afternoon. Cakes, pies, cookies, candies, jellies will be available to the highest bidder. A food area needs to be laid out and prepared for the wine and snack trays that will be available during the sale. All of this has to occur while the regular Saturday evening dining room activity continues as normal. Finally the festivities
started, many things at the silent auction go for between 1 and 10 dollars and every little contribution helps. My daughter bought a beaded necklace for 3 dollars. My son wanted the lighted red Christmas tree but I stopped bidding at 20 dollars so he didn’t get it. My personal favorite auction item was a picture made out of
different types of wood. My wife bought it for me while I was out of the room doing something else. It now
hangs in my bedroom. I also bought a set of lights made by Larry Glass, some smoked ribs and chicken salad and a wonderful German chocolate upside down
cake. I bid on many other items and had a great time. Never had that much fun shopping before!!! Of course the important thing is that due to the
generosity of many attendees at the end of the night we had raised almost 3200 dollars, Once expenses are taken care of that will still leave considerable funds for reinvestment in the community. Come out to the lodge meetings during the next year and have your say in what happens to those funds. Thank You for showing that Elks Care-Elks Share.
