Davenport Elks Lodge #298 Hoop Shoot State Winner Advances to Regionals

The Iowa Elks State Hoop Shoot competition was held in Grinnell, Iowa, on Saturday, February 27, 2016. Two contestants, 8-9 Year-Old Girls District Division winner Stella Smith, McKinley Elementary, Davenport, and 10-11 Year-Old Girls District Division winner Hattie Hagedorn, Alan Shephard Elementary, Long Grove, traveled to Grinnell with funds provided by the Davenport Elks Lodge #298 to compete for the Iowa state title in their respective divisions.

Hattie Hagedorn rocked it and is the Elks 10-11 Year-Old Girls Division state champion! Hagedorn made 21 of 25 free throws claiming the Iowa Elks Hoop Shoot state title for her division, and after a competitive shoot-off with a girl from the 12-13 year-old division, Hagedorn also claimed the title of the Overall Top Female Free Throw Shooter in the state of Iowa. Stella Smith finished fourth in the 8-9 Year-Old Girls Division.

Hagedorn will advance to the North Central Regional Elks Hoop Shoot Semi-Final, held in Iowa City on Saturday, March 19, 2016, to compete against the 10-11 year-old state champion girls from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Across the country, there will be 288 state champions competing in 12 different cities for a chance to win the opportunity of a lifetime–a trip to the Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago, Ill.

We are so proud of both Hattie and Stella. The kids loved the competition and had so much fun. It was tough, and they both gave it their best. We hope Stella will compete again next year,” said Exalted Ruler John Zamora. “As for Hattie, we are looking forward to her regional competition in mid-March and wish her the best as she continues her Hoop Shoot journey. Of course, we also hope she advances to the Elks National Hoop Shoot Finals, held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, in Chicago, Ill.
