The Keyport-Matawan Elks will be holding their annual Charity Ball in March 24, 2018, at the North Centerville Firehouse in Hazlet. This is our most important charitable event held. This year we will be sponsoring two children. A 16 month old little girl from North Brunswick named Peyton, whose Great Uncle is a member in our Lodge and an 8 year old girl whose cousin is a member in our Lodge.

Peyton is our one year old child: After Payton was born, she was found to be suffering from “floppy baby syndrome,” she was not breathing correctly and had to be put on a c-pap machine. They were able to hold her for just two minutes before she was rushed off to the NICU. Whenever Payton tried to eat, she wouldn’t ingest more than five mL at a time and she would also choke on it. She was diagnosed with a suck-swallow- breathe malfunction, possibly related to her brain. Payton stayed in Princeton Plainsboro Hospital for nine days before she was moved to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in hopes of pinpointing a more specific diagnosis. Today Peyton needs a special pediatric seating and positioning chair that will grow with her as she grows.

Paige is our 8 year old child: A daily life living with Type One Diabetes is unfortunately different every day. Paige has to check her blood sugar anywhere from 10-15 times a day.  Whenever she eats, if she has high blood sugar, low blood sugar, during and after activities. When Paige has low blood sugar she has to have 15 carbs of juice (fast acting) to bring up her blood sugar. Sometimes she’ll have crackers if needed. Paige will have to sit until her blood sugar goes into range.  If her blood sugar drops and untreated she will pass out and could die. Sometimes Paige knows when her blood sugar is low. During the nights she doesn't know when her blood sugar is dropping.   If her blood sugar is too high she will have to drink lots of water and an intake of insulin to bring down her blood sugar. We will have to check for ketones in her urine, as well as the nurse in school. Diabetic ketoacidosis is usually triggered by an illness, an infection, and with having high blood sugar.

Paige recently started wearing an insulin pump called the Minimed 670g pump (first hybrid closed loop system) the first and only system that constantly self-adjusts to automatically keep glucose levels in target range, based on your daily life. We are still missing one device that allows this system to work together.  With her wearing a pump means no shots, everything goes through the pump. I insert a needle with a tube like into her leg for the insulin.  Today Paige needs that special device which is almost like an artificial pancreas.

We would appreciate if you can make a donation in the form of an ad for our ad journal for this benefit.

Tickets are $50.00 per person which includes food, drinks, and a great evening!
