Ready in Reno

This September, youth across the country are preparing for their chance on the foul line during the 42nd annual Elks National Hoop Shoot. As they perfect their shots, Hoop Shoot Lodge Director Chris Anastassatos perfects his Lodge’s contest. After 41 years on the job, he has the Hoop Shoot down to a science.

Shortly after joining Reno, Nev., Lodge No. 597, Anastassatos became involved with the Hoop Shoot and has never looked back.

“I love the sport of basketball and I love working with young people,” says Anastassatos. “The Hoop Shoot is my contribution to my community and our youth.”

The Reno Difference

To make his contest a success, Anastassatos gets the whole community involved. Each year, he partners with the local Boys and Girls Club to host his contest and celebrates with winners by shooting free throws during halftime at University of Nevada basketball games.

He encourages all Hoop Shoot Directors to build relationships with community organizations and continue relationships with former participants.

“I follow our Hoop Shoot champions while they compete in high school and college,” explains Anastassatos. “We also collect email addresses from families at our contest to send them invitations and contest results year after year.”

In the Off-Season

When not busy emailing families or coordinating Hoop Shoot contests, Anastassatos stays active as a father to three daughters and grandfather to seven grandchildren, all of whom probably shoot some pretty great free throws.

Through the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program, the Elks National Foundation offers youth the opportunity to engage in healthy competition, connect with their families and community, and succeed both on and off the court. In 2013-14, the ENF allocated $692,750 to fund this program. For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit www.elks.org/hoopshoot.
