KENTUCKY STATE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY
Introducing State President Terrell Cartwright,PDD and Rita Cartwright, from Madisonville Elks Lodge #738
THE MEANING OF ELKDOM
The following is an excerpt of a speech given in 1924 by the Exalted Ruler of Lodge #8, William S. Heidenberg. It is without a doubt, the best description of the meaning of Elkdom I have seen and is evidence that our predecessors had excellent control of the English language, to a degree that we may never see again.
“Elkdom is the great melting pot of American civilization. She gathers within her fold Catholic and Protestant, Jew and Gentile. Her only allegiance is that to a Supreme Being. Her loyalty is alone to the Stars and Stripes; she stands as a bulwark against invisible government and against those forces that would strike at the foundation stone of constituted authority. Her only creed is that of Charity — charity not alone of the purse but of the heart as well; that charity which gives to every man the right to worship his God according to the dictates of his own conscience. Resting on such a foundation, our efforts can never fail.”

SPONSOR’S MESSAGE
“I paid my dues.” Oh, sure, it was easy enough to write a check to my Lodge for this year’s dues. But in a broader sense, have I really paid my dues? Have I lived up to my obligations as an Elk? The stock market has nosedived. Retirement nest eggs have largely evaporated. Bankruptcies are cropping up like dandelions in my yard. News of foreclosures dominate the evening news. Because of the greed of Wall Street bankers, some folks in my community have lost their jobs. For others, it is difficult to put food on the table. For still others the dream of attending college has vanished because the money for tuition, books and housing has also vanished. Like all of you, I am a part of my community. We Elks are woven into the fabric of the towns in which our Lodges are located. But reflect for a moment on whether — as individuals and as Elks Lodges — we do enough to extend a helping hand to those in our communities who need it. Have you volunteered to help serve meals to the increasing number of folks visiting the Soup Kitchen? Have you revisited the notion of doing something to help the homeless where you live? Have you considered volunteering to teach adults how to read? To teach kids how to dream? Reduced to its lowest common denominator, it is man helping his fellow man. Have you paid your Elks dues? It is a tricky question. To find the true answer, maybe you should look further than your checkbook. Maybe you should look into your heart. You may just find that in these economic hard times, the opportunities to “pay your dues” abound. As Elks, now is the time for us to seize those opportunities.

As Elks, we are very involved with Veterans and those currently serving in our Military. When you see a young service man sometimes, you cannot always say what you would like to say. Words like God Bless, take care, thank you for your service all seem to come to mind. A group has started a simple but moving program to let our Troops and Veterans know we care. It is a gratitude campaign Copy and past the link below it is a very simple way to say Thank You....

Mr. Alex Schneider from Lyndon Lodge No. 2052 earned an Elks watch from the Grand Lodge Membership Committee for his efforts in recruiting 11 new members to his Lodge. Alex Schneider has my congratulations, my admiration and my respect.
There is nothing more important to our Subordinate Lodges than recruiting qualified men and women to join our Order. Alex is an inspiration not only to your Lodge, but also to the State Association.

The Madisonville Elks Lodge presented "A Student's Dictionary" to all third-graders in Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Webster counties. That is 1,357 dictionaries. The gift was made possible by a grant from the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent Order of the Elks, as part of its educational program. "The dictionary is yours to keep," Michael Bryant, Esteemed Loyal Knight of the Lodge, told Grapevine Elementary School students Oct. 28, 2008. "There's information in it you can use all the way through your senior year in high school." In addition to words and definitions, the book includes information on U.S. Presidents, states, countries and planets. Inside the back cover is listed the longest word in the English language, which has 1,909 letters. "I cannot pronounce it," Bryant said. "You all need to learn it." Here's a hint. The word is an enzyme starting with the letter M.
Clockwise from front, L. Jackson, S. Ross, E. Boren, H. Helton, and M. Seibert display the dictionaires they and the rest of the thrid grade classes received from, Michael Bryant, Bill Patterson, Jim Dorris and Charles Tarter of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Grapevine Elementary School Principal Joan Radford.
Florence Elks Lodge Members Help Boone County Roads Get a Little Cleaner
On October 4th, many members of the Florence Elks Lodge walked several roads in the Burlington area picking the litter thrown to the wayside by the general public. Litter is a problem in many areas of the county; if you drive any road in the area, you will see many different items, from simple cigarette butts, to plastic bags to broken satellite dish systems. Each of these items has a severe impact on the environment. The members of the Elks walked over ten miles, and filled over 20 bags of trash, to help Boone Counties Solid Waste division keep our streets clean. We must all remember the many items that are thrown by the way side are not biodegradable and can seriously harm not only our environment, but can hurt the natural wildlife in the area. Take the time, as we did, to help, don’t just step over that piece of trash, stop and pick up what you see too keep our environment clean.

The Marshall County Elks Lodge #2707 Participated in the national DICTIONARY PROJECT. The aim is to provide dictionaries, at no cost, to third grade students. These reference books are theirs to keep and use through their time in school. The Lodge presented dictionaries to the third grade class at Christian Fellowship School. The third grade teacher, Mrs. Whitt, chose the dictionary she felt best suited her students. We support and are very active in our own communities filling a need where we see a need. There are times when people come to us but more often we go out looking to help.
