What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a new way to read your favorite websites. Instead of having to go to each site on your reading list individually, you can have the latest news from every site delivered to you, in one centralized location.
Many sites are using RSS feeds to push content to visitors, including major newspapers, media sharing sites and personal blogs. By subscribing to the Elks RSS feed, you'll automatically receive our latest news right in your RSS reader. It's faster and more convenient than email and is the absolute easiest way to keep up with the latest happenings in the Elks.
In order to begin reading our RSS feed, you'll need a feed reader. You can either install one on your computer or, preferably, use one of the several free, web-based readers out there. If you have an email account with GMail, Yahoo! or Hotmail, then you already have access to a feed reader and can start subscribing today. Better yet, if you're using a modern web browser like Firefox, Safari or the latest version of Internet Explorer, you can read RSS feeds right inside your browser.
Web-Based RSS Readers
- Google Reader is free and works over the web - which means that you don't need to install any software on your computer to read feeds and you can access it from anywhere. Plus, if you already have GMail or an account with one of Google's other services, you're already set up to go with Reader! Just point your browser to Google Reader home page and start subscribing to feeds.
- Bloglines is another web-based feed aggregator like Google Reader.
- Yahoo! and Microsoft also offer web-based feed readers, so if you have a Yahoo! or Hotmail email account, you already have an RSS reader.
- All major web browsers - Firefox, Safari and the latest version of Internet Explorer all have RSS readers built-in. When you browse to a page that is available as a feed, a small RSS icon lights up in your browser window. Click on it to subscribe to the feed for that page and your browser will automatically fetch new articles as they are posted.
Windows RSS Readers
- SharpReader is a fast, full-featured and free RSS reader for Windows.
- FeedDemon is another free Windows reader.
Mac RSS Readers
- Apple Mail has a built-in RSS reader.
- Vienna is an open-source, free feed reader with a simple, elegant interface.
