Michael Ohren - 2010-2011 Citizen of the Year

Each year the Exalted Ruler is authorized to select a Citizen of the Year. This award is presented to someone who has contributed in a special way to improving our community. This individual should have shown leadership in the community, contributed voluntary service and been an all-around good citizen.
This year Mike Ohren was selected as our Citizen of the Year. He works very closely with the girl scouts, arranging for our Lodge to award the bronze, silver and gold awards. He arranges for the girl scouts to attend our Youth Awards Banquet and also attends their awards ceremony.
He also sets up the Angel Tree Program for our Lodge. He contacts the Nebraska Children's Home, who provides him with the names of needy children placed in foster care. He promotes this program within our Lodge and in turn provides 50 gifts for these children.
Mike also takes it upon himself to set up a time for our Lodge to serve a meal at the Ronald McDonald House each quarter.
Mike is also known in his neighborhood as the owner of "Big Bertha". Every time there is a measurable snow Mike is out before dawn blowing snow with "Bertha", making sure everyone's driveways and sidewalks are clear. Last fall two of his elderly neighbors moved to a different part of Omaha and Mike still would travel across Omaha to clean their sidewalk and driveway. He is also an active member of St. Thomas More Church.
