SOCCER SHOOT - HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

Picture this...a beautiful fall day; complete with blue
skies, picuresque clouds, clear crisp air, 15 Elks and
2 LOTEs spending their Saturday looking for some kids
to kick soccer balls into goals. And did they ever find
them! Fifty-five of them! The winners of each category
then progressed on to the District Soccer Shoot that was
held at our Lodge, and 3 kids moved on to the State Soccer
Shoot in Ocean City (results not available at this writing).
Moving on to the State Competition are Emma Baker (U-10),
Ryan Purnell (U-10) and Alex Fuerstein (U-14).
The Soccer Shoot is a Grand Lodge Sponsored Program,
and Dover Lodge is proud to participate in it annually.

YOUTH WEEK

Dover Lodge celebrated Youth Week with special events to
celebrate the youth of our community. Governor Markell
proclaimed the first week of May as Youth Week for the
State of Delaware, as did Mayor Carey for the City of
Dover.

Drug Awareness

All in all, over 400 kids and parents had access to info
available to educate the community on the dangers of drugs,
tobacco and alcohol. It was present at the Home Run Derby
and at Silver Lake, for the Fishing Derby. Dover Liitle
League was so impressed with our trailer, that they re-
quested that we bring the Drug Awareness Trailer back out
to the Park for their fundraising event called, Slugger
Sam.
Many thanks to Kline Kemp and Gary Johnston for driving to Seaford to pickup the State Associationn's Drug Awareness
Trailer, and bring it to our Lodge. And to Bill Zaac for
getting it to and from the Home Run Derby. And to Kline and
Jerry Whitmore for getting it to and from the Fishing
Derby, as well as back to the Dover Little League. Thanks
to Jason Duda for helping me clean, organize, and man the
trailer, as well as putting bags together to hand out. But,
even more than that, he has volunteered to be the Drug Awareness Chairman. Thank You Jason!
Please contact him to offer your services as this is a
major focus of our Youth Programs. You can reach him at 335-1107, or contact our Youth Activities Chairman, Jeef
Carlson or Donna Watson, ER.

Fishing Derby

"You shoulda seen the one that got away". That was the
story we heard at Silver Lake on Saturday, May 9th, as
Elks National Youth Week 2009 concluded with the 16th
Annual Fishing Derby for kids. And that was from our
volunteers.
We had over 40 kids and 19 volunteers turn out for this
morning of fish 'tales' and angling at the Lake. The kids
had a fantastic time. Some fishing for the first time; and
some who were (young) ol' pros. The winners in each age
category won tackle boxes and fishing poles among other
things. We also had the State Association's Drug Aweareness
Trailer here, and each child received a bag filled with
pamphlets and information on the dangers of using drugs.
The volunteers had a rewarding experience as they
measured and identified each fish that caught the line. The
weather couldn't have been more perfect. And providing such
a wholesome time for the kids is what Elks are all about.
The free hotdogs were just the icing on the cake.
Many thanks to Jack Conrad for chairing the committee,
and to Gary Jognston for coordinating the whole event,
buying the awards, and making sure that a good time was
had by all. Of course, it could not have happened without
the following volunteers: Pat and Terry Conley, Jack and
Florence Zatlokovich, Linda Conrad, Jason Duda, Terry
Fulmer, Alexis Davis, Frances Clauser, Kline Kemp, Jerry
Whitmore, Donna Watson, Carolyn Courtyney, Debi Voshell,
Kevin McLaughlin, Jeff Carlson. Lindalee Allen and Bonnie
Schmuck.

Girl Scouts Beautification Project

Members of Girl Scout Troup 90, sponsored by Dover Elks
Lodge #1903, planted flowers in front of the Elks sign on
Saulsbury Road in Dover. The girls planted the flowers to
show their appreciation to the Lodge, as well as to cele-
brate Elks National Youth Week, May 1-7.

Recognize America's Outstanding Youth!

The first week in May is designated as Elks
National Youth Week. It's not too early to begin
planning to take part by volunteering at one of
the events we have planned, or by inviting and
encouraging our youth to participate.
The theme of our Grand Exalted Ruler, Paul
Helsel, for 2008-2009 is "Elks-Growing Elkdom
and Strengthing America". In his words, "What
better way to carry this theme
forw2ard than through the vigorous application
of our many outstanding Youth Programs in your
local community".
Our Lodge has various programs throughout the
year. We support a very active scouting community.
We support the Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot contests.
We sponsor teenagers to Seven Springs, and we send
young boys and girls to Camp Barrett during the
summer. We have programs for Drug Awareness,
Americanism and Scholarships. The LOTE host
parties for children for many of the holidays
as well.
These programs all help to foster our youth and
help them grow into productive citzens. So please
plan
ahead and help make this years National Elks Youth
Week a success for our Dover Lodge. If you're not
able to take part, take a moment the next time you
see one of our scouts, and let them know how proud
you are of their positive involvement in the
community.

*May 3 - Home Run Derby at Schutte - Registration
at 9AM - 7 to 14 yr olds.
*May 8 - Youth Dance at our Lodge - 8 to 13 yr olds.
