Santa Ana LRGV Wildlife Refuge

The designation of Lower Rio Grande Wildlife refuge in 1979 set the wheels in motion for connecting the remaining fragments of habitat left along the last 275 miles of the Rio Grande's journey. The aim of the refuge is to lace together the tapestry of the Rio Grande, from Falcon Dam to the Gulf of Mexico. Without this thread of a refuge, we face the fraying of one of nature's richest havens. Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR will assure a future for the the 1,100 plant, 287 butterfly, and 700 vertebrate species (including 465 bird species) that make their home in the four most southern counties in Texas. The refuge will be a corridor of biological diversity and a powerful magnet for birdwatchers and other naturalists from around the world. Staff and volunteers at the Santa Ana and Lower Rio Grande Valley NWRs visitor center can provide you with additional information and maps for both refuges.
