The Spirit of Carnival: A Biloxi Tradition

The Spirit of Carnival: A Biloxi Tradition

For more than a century, the spirit of Carnival has danced through the streets of Biloxi, weaving together history, tradition, pageantry, and community. Long before Mardi Gras became synonymous with New Orleans, the Gulf Coast embraced the celebration brought by French explorers who arrived along these shores in the late seventeenth century. The traditions of Carnival took root throughout the region, and by 1908 Biloxi celebrated its first recorded Mardi Gras parade, a magnificent spectacle of floats, flambeaux, music, royalty, and civic pride that would become a treasured part of our city's heritage. Since those early days, generations of Biloxians have gathered beneath the colors of purple, green, and gold to celebrate not only a season, but a shared identity. Carnival represents far more than parades and balls. It is a living tradition that honors fellowship, creativity, service, and the enduring bonds that connect us as a community.

The Biloxi Elks Lodge proudly embraces these same values. Like Carnival itself, our Lodge has long served as a gathering place where friendships are forged, traditions are preserved, and future generations are welcomed into a rich legacy of community service and civic pride. Through our annual Mardi Gras Ball, we celebrate the pageantry and elegance of Carnival while honoring the charitable spirit that defines the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

This page serves as a living record of that legacy.

Here we honor the Kings, Queens, Captains, Courts, and Royal Families who have carried the mantle of Carnival throughout the years. Their contributions helped shape the traditions we enjoy today, and their names remain forever woven into the story of our Lodge and our city.

As each Carnival season unfolds, new royalty joins a distinguished line stretching back through generations of Biloxi revelers. Their crowns may pass from year to year, but the spirit they represent endures--a spirit of celebration, fellowship, generosity, and joy.

May this record preserve the memories of those who came before us, inspire those who will follow, and remind us all that Carnival is more than a season.

It is a tradition.

It is a legacy.

It is Biloxi.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

May the magic of Carnival forever reign within the Biloxi Elks Lodge.
