Vocational Visions, a Mission Viejo charity supporting adults with disabilities, is hosting its fourth annual Eat & Greet, Support Our Fleet from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at 23612 Alambre.

The proceeds will go toward purchasing five new Sprinter vans that will be equipped with three wheelchair positions and allow for transportation to job sites and more community outings for Vocational Visions’ participants.

ELKS LODGE HOLDS EVENT FOR VETERANS

Members from the Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge and nine other lodges of the Orange Coast District supported the fourth annual Orange County Stand Down, which included serving breakfast and a spaghetti dinner to more than 300 homeless and at-risk military veterans.

The Elks Lodge also used a $2,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation to fill backpacks with a blanket, first aid kit, toothbrush and toothpaste, and other grooming items. The vets were treated tomedical, dental and vision exams, mental health and substance abuse counseling, benefits assistance, employment and housing assistance, hot showers, clothing and bedding.

RESIDENTS TO PERFORM IN COMEDY SHOW

Comedians Tom Riehl of Mission Viejo and Ron Ruhman of Lake Forest are performing in the Second Stage Stand-Up five-year anniversary show at the Camino Real Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11. RAISE A GLASS TO FIND A CURE FOR CANCER

The High Park Tap House on 23641 Via Linda is raising funds for breast cancer research with Green Flash Brewery of San Diego by hosting a Raise a Glass to Find a Cure drive through October. For every glass poured of its selected brew Treasure Chest, $1 will be donated by High Park Tap House and another $1 by Green Flash Brewery to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, according to tap house owner Valorie Green. Lisa Hinkley, cofounder of Green Flash Brewery, is a breast cancer survivor.

FREE VISION SCREENING FOR CHILDREN UNDER 5

The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks and the city of Mission Viejo and Better Vision for Children Foundation will host free vision screenings for children up to 5 years old noon-5 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Elks Lodge, 25092 Marguerite Parkway.

NATIONAL GUARD GRADUATE

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Eva Jakubowicz has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas. The eight-week program included training in military discipline, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare skills.

Jakubowicz, a 2001 graduate of Capistrano Valley High School, is the niece of Dianne Greener of Laguna Hills and Robert Blank of Lake Forest.

POST CARDS FOR RED RIBBON WEEK

The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks are on a mission to have 975 members sign and send red ribbon postcards to Washington. The mission is part of the larger goal of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America sending 200,000 Red Ribbon Week postcards by Oct. 15. The drug awareness campaign aims to remind people of the dangers of using drugs.

WET SEAL DONATES $15,000

Wet Seal, based in Foothill Ranch, has donated $15,000 to Laura’s House, a Ladera Ranch-based domestic abuse shelter. The funds came from the sales of special shirts where Wet Seal sold 5,000 “end the silence of domestic violence” tank tops nationwide.

STUDENTS EARN HIGHER BLACK BELTS
